Most people know of this album, indeed most people probably own it by now! So, I won't review the tracks or album as a whole, as this has probably been done better elsewhere and many times before. I bought it when it actually came out, back in 1999, to poor reviews and little fanfare. (A fact many people don't know). I even bought all the singles, as I have nearly all of Moby's singles to date; so why do you ask, did I buy it again, when I probably have all the tracks anyway?
Well, as you can probably deduce, I'm a bit of a Moby fan and collector, having gotten the bug when 'Everything is Wrong' came out. There are other reasons for buying this box set however; firstly some of the b-side tracks differ slightly from the versions released ... Read More:

Since this is one MOBY's first CD's, one cannot be too tough on him. However, the term ambient (penned by Brian Eno in the Seventies) used to mean multi-layered, ethereal space/mood music. Moby keeps the layers and the moods, but the constant percussion (it's good) keep it from being anything but relaxing. This represents a good foreshadowing of what moby was to produce.

Welcome back Mz Harry, to the limelight once again (hopefully). After hearing the demo for this track on an unnamed popular video site, this is by far her best work to date. Yeah I know it says Moby on it, but trust me, it's all about the Queen Of The USA herself. This track is about both Moby and Deborah's hometown, New York! The lines are divine: "Does, It Taste Right? Does It Feel Right" and "Do You Know My Name? Do You Even Care?" YES DEBBIE WE DO!!!!!
If your counting this as Debbie going solo (which is basically is) then this is surely her finest work since "French Kissin'" or "I Want That Man"!
Buy It NOW! Get it to NUMBER ONE! IT DESERVES IT!
End Sermon.
Yours Sincerely,
An Insane DH Fan.

This isn't consistently brilliant like Play or consistently good like 18, but it does have some simply outstanding material on it. The opening Hymm, for exapmple, and Into the Blue, God Moving Over the Face of the Waters and When it's Cold I like to Die. Those are the dreamy, whistful spacey ones. Also exceptional is Everytime You Touch Me, and I don't usually like that sort of thumping club music. It's tracks like All That I Need is to be Loved that I don't like. I find them discordant and jarring.

Moby's self-titled debut is merely just a collection of tracks and singles released under the Instinct label during the late 80s and early 90s, and whilst such collections seem uneven and sparse, this album, with its relentless energy of early 90s house and techno anthems seems to have manageable cohesion and consistency.
Beginning with the hard-edged raving 'Drop A Beat', this track sets the tone and epitomises most of the hard-edged techno that is vastly featured amongst the album's twelve tracks, such as the chaotic 'Next Is The E', the darkly sounding 'Have You Seen My Baby' and the catchy 'Ah-Ah'.
But whilst the album's notoriety is for featuring heavily danceable tracks its best moments lie in the mid-tempo 'Go' (a British ... Read More:

This CD is absolutely fantastic. I loved 'Extreme Ways' and 'For the Love of Strings' best. They were great. This CD is a must have for any Amazon customer.

I decided to write this review because I was intrigued by the magazines reviews about the re-release of the Moby Grape albums.
If you buy this anthology - which is still easily available (notwithstanding what you may read on the contrary!) - you have an excellent introduction with the entire first album represented and therefore you can make your mind whether or not spend more money on the single albums.
Definitely recommended and then, once you've listened through the two CDS, you will decided if you want to hear more or not.
Great liner notes as well.
