Stanley Kubrick is one of Mogwais best, featuring an organ drone, and a beautiful slide guitar, with cut up speech floating in the background. 'Christmas song' is not 'Christmas steps', and is no way related, but is still great. But the moments everyone wants, are the loud parts, and on 'Rage:man', 'rollerball' and 'Burn girl prom queen' all explode with that mogwai distortion we all love, but it is more controlled, in the style of 'christmas steps', rather than the pummeling distortion of 'mogwai fear satan'. Young Team

Young Team will probably always be my favourite Mogwai album, as I associate it with a certain period of time and it was the first thing I bought by them. That's not to say the things released before & after have no value- My Father the King & Happy Songs for Happy People were standout releases. I had been listening to lots of old Echo & the Bunnymen and Joy Division records when this came out, & it fitted with those- the next step on, no need for vocals. This is probably where the post-rock tag came in...& Mogwai stand out as one of those post-rock (or should it be post-Slint?) acts who espouse an indie (pre-Britpop/Corporate perversion) aesthetic & create soundscapes from what was once guitar rock- see also: Explosions ... So different, like every Mogwai album. A wintery work of genius that allows you to experience the good stuff from a different perspective. The chill out tracks are perfection, and the Face the Future Remix is terrifying. The Fear Satan remix is simply bliss. Its just one more reason to live.

Mr. Beast marks the long-awaited return of much-loved Scottish band Mogwai. On this, their, fifth album, the band display their mastery of both epic, skyscraper-razing post-rock (see `Glasgow Mega Snake') and understated, hypnotic melancholia (`Acid Food', `Friend of the Night'), as well as reaffirming the theory that vocals should be used sparingly for maximum effect: only three of the ten tracks on offer here feature any singing, and while Tetsuya Fukagawa of Japanese hardcore band Envy's spoken word contribution to `I Chose Horses' is unlikely to get the dancefloor pumping down at your local vodka bar, it is a gently moving experience representative of the album as a whole.
