Mr. Beast marks the long-awaited return of much-loved Scottish band Mogwai. On this, their, fifth album, the band display their mastery of both epic, skyscraper-razing post-rock (see `Glasgow Mega Snake') and understated, hypnotic melancholia (`Acid Food', `Friend of the Night'), as well as reaffirming the theory that vocals should be used sparingly for maximum effect: only three of the ten tracks on offer here feature any singing, and while Tetsuya Fukagawa of Japanese hardcore band Envy's spoken word contribution to `I Chose Horses' is unlikely to get the dancefloor pumping down at your local vodka bar, it is a gently moving experience representative of the album as a whole.

My Father, My King

a rediculously amazing song that sums-up everything that is good in post rock. one of those few songs that will give you goose-bumps and make the hair on the back of your kneck stand on end. almost perfect and one of the best post-rock songs of all time.
if you like it check out 'godspeed! you black emperor', 'mono', 'explosions in the sky', '65 days of static' and 'upcdowncleftcrightc ABC+start'.

Young Team: Deluxe Edition/Remastered & Expanded [VINYL]

Young Team will probably always be my favourite Mogwai album, as I associate it with a certain period of time and it was the first thing I bought by them. That's not to say the things released before & after have no value- My Father the King & Happy Songs for Happy People were standout releases. I had been listening to lots of old Echo & the Bunnymen and Joy Division records when this came out, & it fitted with those- the next step on, no need for vocals. This is probably where the post-rock tag came in...& Mogwai stand out as one of those post-rock (or should it be post-Slint?) acts who espouse an indie (pre-Britpop/Corporate perversion) aesthetic & create soundscapes from what was once guitar rock- see also: Explosions in the ... Young Team

I've only given this one listen through so far, and I've loved every bit of it so far. First stand-out track was Tracy, and it was only after listening to the sublime Mogwai Fear Satan that I was able to understand the luke-warm reviews of Mr. Beast. This is in my opinion their very best album.

Theres things I like in this album, but I dont think its as good as Mr. Beast. My sister bought me Mr. Beast while honeymooning with her new hubby in Scotland and I fell in love with that album...So of course I became a big fan of this band and was anticipating for this album to come out. Im not dissapointed at all and theres many great songs on it, but theres a few songs I find that drag on too long, especially the songs that really dont go anywhere in 6 minutes...This album is still one of my faves with Rock Action, Happy Songs, and Mr Beast.

Friend of the Night

And here we are with everyone's favourite scottish noisemakers with their first single to be taken from their upcomming new album. And... its all very nice and its all very pianoy and its all very Mogwai and its all very 'post rock'. And really thats about it. Well, no thats not it but Mogwai have not progressed very much since their last release. Which in a way was to be expected, which isnt really all that bad. This is by no means a bad song. Its just that it hasnt really done anything for me, maybe in the space of an album it will work better..but what do i know?. Ah well,what about the other three songs on this then?

Fresh Crown is better, again its based around a piano piece, with what sounds like a drum machine and some backwards ... Read More:

Ten Rapid

Summer the first track is very interesting,as is helicon 2.Sadly helicon 1 and a lot of the other tracks are slightly bland much like youngteam,but unlike young team it has fewer good tracks ,.I personally recommend Mr.Beast or Happy Songs For Happy People.Good luck!!
