Puzzles Like You

I've been a fan of Mojave 3 since their first album 'Ask Me Tomorrow' and I very much like their rather 'laid-back' sound. I must admit to being disappointed with the last album and was a little hesitant about buying this one - but overall I'm glad I did.

This is a (relatively) up tempo offering - really quite uplifting overall, and although it looses its way about half way through, it picks up again towards the end. My only real gripe is the sound - which is normally pretty good and understated on their CDs. Most of the songs here are really compressed and limited - I'm not sure why they've done this - the louder the music gets, the more restricted and small it sounds. Spoon and Rafter

Great album, even better than previus. Better produced, depper sound and detailed soundscapes. I can only recommend this, and would just for others who might not have noticed recommend Neil Halstead's solo album as well - equally amazing. There is just nothing more soft, smooth and pensive than the halstead-mojave sound. Here with clear beachboys remnants, among others.

Excuses For Travellers

I've been a fan of Mojave 3 after hearing their single Return to Sender on epitonic, soon after I bought Spoon and Rafter, which coincidentally is just as good, however it was upon purchasing Excuses for Travellers, that I realised that this was their best work. Each carefully written and composed track on this album is amazing, with it's soothing melancholy feeling.

Neil Halsteads voice suits the music perfectly, it's almost effortless and flows perfectly. The opening track is a gorgeous, dreamy pop song, with its careful build-up, before simmering off at the end. Breaking the Ice

Although I like this album a lot, I think it's perhaps the worst album Mojave 3 made so far. It's more upbeat and therefore lacks the sad, touching feeling I so immensely enjoyed on their other records.

Out of Tune

This record is so overlooked. A lost classic. It really is, you have to believe me. Mojave 3 are steeped in the traditions of true country folk music, Out Of Tune brings to mind such luminaries as Neil Young, The Byrds, Nick Drake and Bob Dylan, but importantly Mojave 3 have taken the essence of those artists to create a beautiful soundscape of voices and guitars. A truly great record.

Whereas emotions were previously hidden behind feedback you now get wide open spaces and simplicity. The music is very quiet and dreamy. It's simple minimal arrangements of acoustic guitars, cello and piano, with Rachel Goswell's lovely distant voice. It's quiet and peaceful Alt-County and it reminds me of early Mazzy Star.

Ask Me Tomorrow is so unforgiving bleak it's sometimes hard to listen to. The only time I listen to this album is on my own at 4am when I should have gone to bed hours ago.
