The Monkees were two folk singers and two actors pulled together to from a Beatles-lite pop group for mop top hungry American teenagers. Whilst the real fab four were dabbling with drugs, facial hair and musical experimentation, the Monkees offered easy on the ear tunes and whacky 'comedy'. They were derided at the time by serious muscians and the critics ripped into them on a weekly basis.
But time has been kind to the bands musical legacy and, with song writers such as Carole King and Neil Diamond on board, the Monkees are now seen as pioneers. The original manufactured boy band but with added great songs.
'I'm A Believer', 'Pleasant Valley Sunday', 'Last Train to Clarkesville' and the perenial 'Daydream Believer' have stood the ... Read More:

For a 1960s teen band, the Monkees stood head and shoulders above the rest in the quality of their tuneful songs and their strong pop voices. This music has aged surprisingly well and most of the songs far surpass today's pop by any measure. There are hooks aplenty in these catchy little gems whilst the vocals and instrumentation are just perfect! My favrites include Last Train To Clarksville, I'm A Believer, Stepping Stone, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Daydream Believer, Valleri and Listen To The Band. Michael Nesmith went on to become a successful solo artist himself with songs like Silver Moon, Some Of Shelley's Blues, Nevada Fighter and Joanne. I highly recommend his album Listen To The Band. As for the Monkees, their effusive melodicism shines ... Read More:

The idea behind the Monkees was as everyone knows by now was to make a TV series but when the actors realised the records were being made by session players they rebelled. That's it in a nutshell-a manufactured group like the later cartoon ones the Archies for which both would carry on the tradition of the Brill Building.
Thus its really a myth that professional songwriters were put out of business by the British Invasion or Bob Dylan.
For the Monkees you can read Hermans Hermits-both groups had a singer from Manchester and they too recorded many Brill Building songs.
The Monkees weren't therefore a garage band or even psychedelic. They weren't from a folk background like the Byrds or the Lovin' Spoonful but they were nevertheless ... Read More:

Really great tunes here! For a contemporary comparison I recommend Nick Worrall. His album is FREE to download as well.

The fourth album by the very underated Monkees gets another airing from Rhino. This deluxe edition is a bit thin when it comes to the bonus tracks having a mere 14 (compared to the amount the other three releases in this series enjoy) but the percentage of unissued material is higher: nine of them will make interesting listening for Monkee completists.
Best of the bunch (only my opinion of course, but as I'm writing this I get to choose) is 'What Am I Doing Hangin Round?' with a discarded Nesmith vocal and an absence of backing vocals being the difference. 'She Hangs Out' is another belter distinguished by the extended close. Monkee maniacs will be familiar with 'Riu Chiu' but the version here is the one that graced the TV show.

"Head" was the last Monkees album to feature all four original members. Guitarist Pete Tork left the band shortly after finishing the album.
Though it's a soundtrack and not a regular album it contains some of the Monkees' finest recordings. Especially the two Carole King songs "Porpoise Song" and "As We Go Along" are outstanding. Also Tork's "Can You Dig it" and Nesmith's "Circle Sky" are Monkees classics.
Only 6 tracks on the original album are actually music. The rest of it is soundclips and dialouge; some of it quite entertaining.
Taken from the sleeve notes Jack Nicholson played a big part in the album's/movie's creation, which sounds to be pretty weird.
The bonus tracks are mostly alternate takes - most ... Read More:
