Love moondog 1 (having heard it from the old days of around 1970). Then heard a programme on radio 4 last year (2007) dedicated to Moondog. Wish I could catch it again. Bought the CD. Moondog 1 great. Moondog 2...hmmmmm. is it drivel or is it brilliant. Which side do I come down on? Is it a case of Emperor's new clothes. ANyway, it's worth buying if only for Moondog 1.

I'd heard of this guy back in the late 60's and early 70's from the record sleeves of CBS albums. Really interesting and varied resume of his career from 1949 to 1980's. A lot of rhythmic percussion and plenty of instrument surprises (oboe, sax, and some home made or adapted ones). Music is varied and a warm humanity and sincerity comes through. I wonder if Tom Waits has picked up some influences? A humourous track where he demonstrates how he plays in 9 different times (all in 4)- and that's only a few of them. Gonna check out his other stuff!

Blind he is our Moondog, but he does not bark for pity. He listens to and reproduces what he can capture with his ears. That means his work is a tremendous compilation of sounds from the real world, animals or just insects, his own baby and his own wife, or just some beating on a drum, or the frail dancing of a pipe along with a frog and a cricket. It is this extreme patchwork of sounds, voices, noise and music under the light enchantment from the moon that our artist is imagining in his eternal night. At least for him the moon never sets, never disappears over or behind the hills. "Surf Session" is the only piece that has some real length. The sea surf, the sea waves, the breaking of these waves we imagine along some pebbly seaside give a strange ... Read More:

This is a professional production of an official double disc set that was released in 2004 (5 years after Hardin's death.) It looks good and has 44 enclosed pages of valuable information about Moondog, such as a detailed biography, discography, Moondog's own words about the recordings, personnel listings, lyrics, pictures and a poem that Leonard Bernstein wrote to and about Moondog. Also seeing quotes of Benny Goodman and Frank Zappa praising Moondog's music is particularly exhilarating for a Zappa fan like myself (I had no idea.)
The first disc consists of already released material, most of which I already owned when I bought this set. This disappointed me a bit, as I'd expected additional versions of these titles ... Read More:

Fans of Deus, Tom Waits and interesting, eclectic music will love this album; gruff vocals, quirky ideas, beautiful melodies next to harsh ones (sometimes in the same song), all done in a kind of alt. country meets the Muppets meets Belguim rock with bits of the inevitable Tom Waits, but really they have their own style, and do their own thing.
If you want something strange but satisfying that will last you years of listening, buy it, and check out Zita Swoon, which is the same band, but they had to change their name...
