1995 was probably quite an intimidating time for Morbid Angel. The whole grunge/alt. rock thing was starting to really get into high gear. On the heavier side of music the word 'industrial' was starting to be mentioned in closer and closer circles to the mainstream. Extreme metal bands must have been wondering what, if anything the future held for them. This is somewhat evident on David Vincent's last studio album with the band and shows the only discernible signs of compromise in their long and eminent career.
Of course when I mean compromise, I mean Morbid Angel style compromise. Because after all every one of their albums is different, from the blistering, straight ahead speed workout of Altars of Madness to the complex and epic ... Read More:

Yes, Altars of Madness is one of, if not the, finest death metal albums of all time. But free replica gig tickets? I would mercilessly and relentlessly mock anyone I met with a replica gig ticket for a tour they never got to see. What a load of b0lx.

I am a big fan of Covenant. I had it the week it was released, and still regard it as highly now, as I did when I first heard it. To pull this out of the hat, after producing the ground breaking Blessed are the sick, was quite some feat. Its here that opinion splits into two camps over Trey Azagthoth's 3rd disc.(not including 'Abominations...'). Some people say the production is awful, and that the ideas are rehashed B.A.T.S. concepts. Others, including myself, say "Phooey". This album has some of the finest drumming heard up to that particular moment in time (93)on any death metal album. The riffs on songs like Rapture, 'Pain Devine' and 'Vengeance Is Mine' are frankly genius. It seemed to be a problem that ... Read More:

Morbid Angel, Formulas Fatal to the Flesh - Way back in the year of 1989 the Death Metal godfathers ‘Morbid Angel’ released their debut album ‘Altars Of Madness’. The album saw a new wave of extreme metal form through its creation, hailing the group as one of the most influential metal bands ever. From there on in, the band have released album after album of intense Death Metal with an ever evolving and adapting sound that proved ‘Morbid Angel’ to be unique and very talented metal gods.
A fair few albums later, the band released their sixth album ‘Formulas Fatal To The Flesh’ in the year of 1998. The album saw a major turning point for the band as Steve Tucker joined as bassist and vocalist in the previous year, bringing ... Read More:

To me after almost a decade without hearing a single song by Morbid Angel when I stumbled upon them again at the release of the new album Heretic they sounded stronger and more guttural than ever. Heretic was also something of a test for me as it was the first time I had ever heard them with Steve Tucker filling the colossal shoes David Vincent. Although from the outset his inferior diction and more limited range of vocal techniques doom him to failure this album is none the less a testimony to Morbid Angel's continual evolution and ongoing development.
In some senses heretic is a step backwards. Gone is the glossy, fat Morrisound Studios production that graced every one of their previous albums. And ushered in is a raw, tightly rehearsed, guitar dominated mix helmed by 'Punchy' Gonzales, ... Read More:

This is a selection of early Morbid Angel recordings. Some of the tracks appear on Alters of Madness under different names or with different lyrics. There may even be an early version of something off Blessed are the sick (can't remember without listening to it due to the name change!). As you'd expect for a bunch of tracks unearthed from demo tapes and the like, the sound quality isn't exactly top notch. Over all it's worth a listen and worth buying if you're a big Morbid Angel fan, but newcomers might prefer to try Alters or Blessed.

Morbid Angel are often painted as being something of a one-man-band with Trey Azagthoth apparently wielding total executive control over his long time right hand man Pete Sandoval and whoever is the current occupant of the bass/vox and 2nd guitarist's chair. The more I listen to the band though the more I think this is perhaps not totally the case. Although the Trey Azagthoth trademarks remain intact though all their albums, certain phases of the bands career have been dominated by the playing style of certain individuals. For example the melody and complexity of Blessed are the Sick belonged very much to Richard Brunelle in the same way that the style and lyrical message of Domination belonged very much to David Vincent. Applying this relationship to Gateways to Annihilation it appears to be jointly owned ... Read More:

This album was first given to me back in 1992 i would say and for a young lad who was into guns n roses, skid row and metallica this was something of a shock, never before had i heard such anger, spite and evil and sheer heaviness on a record in my life. But somehow it was what i always wanted to hear, over the following years death metal has become a genre i have walked in and out of but blessed are the sick is an album i will always admire.
It is a slower album than you may think given that it is regarded as a death metal masterpiece and there is a doomy feel to it,but make no mistake this is death metal from a band that had the powers back in 1991 when this was released.David vincents vocals were gutteral but strangely audible, the riffs were relentless and there is a feeling of a death metal band trying something just a little ...
