Black on Both Sides

by: Mos Def

Release Date October 18, 1999
Even though this is just my opinion, i think many can agree that this is the best hip hop album ever released. This is one of those albums that you will have on repeat for the whole day without getting bored of it. For some listeners, it will take a couple of listens to get used to, but as soon as you have you will be recommending this to all of your friends. Now if you're into hip hop from artists like 50 Cent and G Unit this might not be the album for you, but give it a try anyway. Standout tracks include Ms. Fat Booty (a track explaining the relationship between Mos and a girl he meets in a club), Umi Says (a mellow jazz inspired track, with Mos playing many of the instruments included), Do It Now (a high energy track with Busta Rhymes) and ... Black Star

by: Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Black Star

Release Date June 11, 2001
This has got to be one of the most played cd's in my collection.
If you like either mos or talib then you NEED this cd, because quite simply you will wonder how you ever lived without it.
I think it's quite difficult to get hold of at the moment but well worth the effort, funky, raw and cutting edge even now this is a seminal album by two unsung masters of true hip-hop.
I'm not gonna bang on or give a track by track synopsis of this album, i could never do it justice, you just need to listen.

The New Danger

by: Mos Def

Release Date December 03, 2004
Now i know lots of people hate on this because of the rock influence, but i think it works really well! Mos Def can flow brilliantly over rock influenced beats! But the album also shows his skills on true, traditional hip hop songs!
The lyrics are all very intelligent and Mos Def uses great rhyming techniques, plenty of multi's and some pretty deep songs are on here also!
If you like blues i would get this as well, as there's one or two Blues songs on here with some terrific guitar, personally i would have liked Mos Def to rap on these songs, but he sings on them instead!
If you're just getting into Mos Def, get this, but if you're a hardcore fan you may be a bit surprised with what you find, but it's still great!

Mos Definite

by: Mos Def

Release Date April 30, 2007
"Mos Definite is a rare album by Brooklyn rapper Mos Def, which features unreleased songs of his career." (Wikipedia) I don't know what that's supposed to mean...the album is not that great; there are some good songs like "I've Committed Murder" with Guru and the classic "Travellin' Man" which I heard for a long time now, but the album as a whole is lacking.

I don't know who produced and edited the album. Obviously the album is from a collection of producers. I know the Japanese producer, DJ Honda produced the catchy "Travellin Man" but a lot of these songs are just songs in the wrong decade, should've been released about 10 years ago. There really is no purpose to this album. The Talib Kweli collabs are weak. Disappointing!

True Magic

by: Mos Def

Release Date December 29, 2006
This album is great. Very different from the legendary "BOBS", and slightly similar - yet sometimes totally different - to the wonderfully daring "The New Danger". Some people would see this as good, some as bad - I personally love it.

"True Magic" and "Undeniable" are both superb songs, leading directly into eachother and leaving you yearning for more. The next few tracks are a bit mediocre (for Mos Def anyway - still great in general hip hop terms) until the awe-inspiring "Dollar Day" turns up. This song is totally from the heart and Mos' vocals are truly brilliant, whether it be the violent chorus or the soulful verses. "There is A Way" is a wonderfully uplifting song and "Sun, Moon and Stars" is just as good.

Six Days

by: DJ Shadow, Mos Def

Release Date October 21, 2002
The latest single to be taken from The Private Press, the original version of 'Six Days' features a haunting sample from a track called 'Six Day War', whose refrain 'Tomorrow never comes until it's too late' digs its way into your head and won't let go. The remix, featuring Mos Def, is a much harder affair, with more beats and scratching, which give the track a darker feel. This version has a much stronger message, taking its lead from the line 'You never thought we'd go to war after all the things we saw'. The third track is a throw away, but that doesn't stop being an essential purchase for anyone with a love of music, or a conscience.
