I must agree with the previous reviewer J Foulger, I have followed Mostly Autumn's career develop over the last 7-8 years,I have seen the band live 7 times and I have bought all their albums the last 3 albums I bought without even hearing a note (ltd edition versions) and they have cost £27 per item which I dont mind paying because they must struggle financially and it would be a shame if a band this talanted called it a day.But I feel that this album as been affected by changes in the band over the last few years, its very wishy washy, apart from the first track every other tracks starts off very slow and then ends up sending me off to sleep, I'm glad to hear that Iain Jennings is back in the band because he has been badly missed, but hand ... Have only just received this and as such am reviewing on the evidence of a couple of listening - the musicianship gets better all the time and the vocals have been sheared around with Heather getting good helping - early days, but feels like a winner !!

If Pink Floyd had been locked in a studio with a large collection of folk instuments, this is the sort of music they would have made. Mostly Autumn are one of the most creative and original young bands to emerge on to the rock scene for many years. With a blend of progressive guitar and keyboard sounds they create a framework on which to hang all those instuments that don`t normally get an airing in this field, violins, flute, cello, bodhran, whistles and even the bazouki. But dont be put off by that, its very much a rock sound, even at its gentler moments.
Passengers is their fourth album and continues in the same vein as their previous releases, thats not to say it is in any way repetitive or derivitive, its just that they do one thing ... Read More:

Like Jethro Tull, thirty years before them, Mostly Autumn seemed to start out with the bloody minded intention of being as unfashionable as possible. All credit to them for that. Unlike Tull, however, there is nothing remotely progressive about them. Anyone who thinks this lot are progressive rockers needs to get hold of all the Van der Graaf Generator and most of the Gentle Giant albums as a matter of extreme urgency. True, a couple of the pieces are quite long, but the time signatures and changes all seem very conventional. 'Pop-prog' or 'prog-lite' might be an appropriate label. Newcomers to this album need to brace themselves for a bit of a mystery: why, with a more than capable singer to hand, in Heather Findlay, did guitarist Bryan Josh do ... Read More:

I'm predisposed to like this sort of music, suckled as I was at the teat of prog rock in my student days and waxing into manhood among the byways of English and Celtic folk music. You read a few reviews and see MA compared to Pink Floyd... Jethro Tull... Renaissance... what's not to love?
Well, this album has been such a struggle for me. So much here that I ought to be loving and raving about, but so much that infuriates as well. I've ended up coming to the conclusion that I like this record simply _because_ of its contradictions and inadequacies, but more of that anon.
Mostly Autumn (MA) are clearly in the English prog tradition, branching out from "Songs From the Wood" era Tull or "Song For All Seasons" era Renaissance: here ... Read More:

"The Spirit of Autumn Past", Mostly Autumn's second album, is an excellent piece of music that still sounds good today, some 8 years after its release. Compared with their sound of today, this album still contains more of the folk-rock leanings, especially on the fiddle-driven "Shindig", that were quite strong on their debut album "For All We Shared". Unlike on that album, however, the incorporation of that genre into their basic progressive rock style is handled pretty well and the overall result makes for a more pleasing, self-consistent album than that debut.
It's an album well worth searching out for any new fans of the band, even if it is not as easily available as some of their more recent CDs. The trademark sound is already there; Bryan Josh's guitar ... Read More:

The idea of a Mostly Autumn album based on The Lord of the Rings seems somewhat appropriate. There is enough Tolkienesque grandeur in band's music, the atmosphere is just about right and, indeed, the group has already given us glimpses of how Tolkien material translates convincingly into music ("Out of the Inn" and "Helm's Deep"). Thus, in theory, "Music Inspired by The Lord of the Rings" is a marriage made in - eh - Lothlorien.
In practice, the rush to get the album released in time to coincide with the premiere of the film of the book makes this a bit more earthly affair. At its best, "Music Inspired by The Lord of the Rings" is simply excellent - and for some curious reason, given the vocal talents of the group, it is ... Read More:

OK, I admit that Bryan's voice won't satisfy a lot of people. Tough, his guitar playing will! This band of New Age misfits are never going to set the world alight. BUT they do make good music, even though it lacks the focus a good producer could give them. It's a bit of a Curate's Egg, this one, and the mixing is a bit odd - why? The post-production bit shouldn't be that difficult, especially the stereo image -the odd panning is wierd. It's still good enough. Try, and you'll buy.
