Mr Scruff is back, and his new album - Ninja Tuna is a perfect mix of jazz, funk, breaks and hip hop, with collaborations with Latin maestros Quanitc, UK hip-hop legend Roots Manouva and Danny Breaks, a veteran of the dance scene.
The best track on here for me is with Quanitc - Donkey Ride just has this quality about it, and the heavy Latin chords really make this perfect. The beats slide in there and the whole track makes you feel giddy with excitement.
Another fine moment is the collaboration with Roots, his lyrics still raw, and Scruff's soundscape fitting well with the darker side of hip-hop
This album is a bit more varied than the other offerings from Scruff, but it's not as wide as people would like ... Read More:

Mr Scruff (known as Andy Carthy to his mum) is a multi talented DJ producer who is very difficult to pigeon hole (good the way I like it) - his productions on Keep It Unreal are dreamy and very funky, with crazy samples from children's TV of the 50s and 60s.
The finest moment on here for me is Midnight Feast with it's delightful xylophone and jazzy feel, this is a good one for when you want to drift to sleep, and could probably be fun if you're a DJ cutting between tracks - or for scratchin'. Another favourite of mine is Get A Move On, with the sample of an old country record - it's bluesy yet jazz based melody is just fun and can get anyone dancing like a loon.
Altogether this is an excellent album to chill out to late night, ... Read More:

This is one edgy album. Very unpredictable and fresh. I would recommend this to anyone who likes surreal funk that's a bit mad. Buy it otherwise your world will be too normal!

Excellent in every way. Jazzanova set delivers brilliant melodic house, Mr Scruff provides the usual alternative bouncy beats.

Seen the master twice, and got tickets for Cheltenham Jazz Fest again this year! If you havn't seen Mr Scruff play live then you should do it now!!! Un-like DJ's who come to play a set and leave after 1-2 hours, Mr S gives you up to 5-7 hours of pure enjoyment and variety, while providing all his fans with cups of tea at the tea stall! Truley a LEGEND! I once went to speak to him while DJ'ing in Cardiff, and being a bit drunk I practically messed the mix up! But no-one noticed, and he still managed to pull it off! (And i guarantee that would have been hard work)

This CD gets better every time I listen to it. At first I wasn't sure of it, but I gave it the listening Mr.Scruff deserves, and found that this album is actually great. This, being his first release, is quite experimental, Scruff finding his feet, quite diverse, very interesting development, I actually prefer this to 'Trouser Jazz', his lastest album. The opening song 'sea mammle' is a bouncy catchy tune which I think opens the album well. The second song 'Tubby Mechanical Friend' is less bouncy, more chilled, then 'Bass Baby' brings the album alive, into full swing, (turn the bass up to full!!) 'chicken in a box' is a fun tune that follows well, and is a scruff classic, again turn up the bass and dance! ... Read More:

It's a shame this cd has had bad reviews from other people. It seems that some people who bought this were fans of mr scruff, and not big fans of dub/ reggae. If you like dub/ reggae you WILL like this. This is a really good compilation compiled by a wicked dj (go and see him live if you haven't already done so). The first few tracks are sort of old roots/ ska, then theres some really good new dub. Towards the end theres some ragga and drum and bassy stuff. I highly recomend this to any fans of dub/ reggae and to anyone with an open mind. You SHOULD NOT be dissapointed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
