I Phantom

by: Mr. Lif

Release Date September 16, 2002
My God, this album is good. Its a concept album Jim, but not as we know it....

Forget all the hype over The Streets concept album (A Grand Dont Come For Free) - this is the real deal. Starts with Mr Lif dreaming, before waking up and going off to work. Then it cuts to one of his co-workers, telling the story about his failed marriage and new life and family. Then it jumps to the story of his son from the first marriage feeling abandoned, then to his daughter from the second marriage feeling stifled by too much parental love. She commits suicide, then the story follows the cop who investigates the death before a watching spirit takes over, holds a conversation with some third world tribe and starts World War III before finalizing ... Emergency Rations

by: Mr. Lif

Release Date June 24, 2002
Finally a politically alert rapper on a record with dope beats and concepts! After years of gold chains and blunts we have an emcee unwilling to compromise whats important for record sales, and he is ill with a capital I. I have been listening Mr. Lif for a while and own all of his e.ps and the album, aswell as numerous singles, and i have to say this is easily the most complete and potent.
Lyrically Lif has only a handfull of fellow rappers that can challenge him in flow, themes and structure (Aesop Rock or Mf Doom for example). His lyrics are thoughtful and intellectual, yet powerful and aggressive at the same time, balancing his dope ideas and a precise eloquence rarely matched in American hip-hop.
I Phantom let me down when it came to production, ... Read More:

Live at the Middle East

by: Mr. Lif

Release Date April 08, 2002
This CD gives a real taste of the hip hop show. It gives you the feeling that you would experience at a live show.

The rhyming and delivery are among the best at the moment. I definitely think Mr Lif is up there with the likes of Del etc.

If you don't mind fast forwarding through the "between track" talking (which is great first time but becomes annoying), then I am sure you will enjoy it.

Perhaps it might be better to have the album, but this is LIVE, and thats what makes it special. After all, real hip hop heads enjoy freestyling more than anything else.

this is a pretty tough collection of sounds. the beats are extremely dark and industrial. Lif's flows are quality throughout. if you like this kind of dark industrial taxing hip hop then you will love this. if not, you are gonna hate it. oh, and the cover is so so so good. one of my all time faves!

Release Date November 27, 2000
I first became aware of Mr Lif on the tune "Universal" which featured Insight. Here Lif provided tight flow over a seriously catchy beat. THe problem I have therfore with this EP is that whilst the flow is still there, the beats aren't all that. The album requires a lot of listening before you become a custom to the style which is a prime example of leftfield hip hop. This of course isn't a bad thing as the more you listen to the album, the better it becomes and therefore not only are you getting good value for money, but an "intellegent" album. Overall, it is clear that Lif is a good lyricist with a jazzy-like voice. The beats however don't complement his technique (jazzy beats would have served him well,). However if you are looking for an ... Read More:
