My Bloody Valentine's first full length album Isn't Anything was one of the most influential albums of the 1980s. It remains the best showcase of Kevin Shields guitar sound. This sound was achieved by means of continuous manipulation of the whammy bar on Shields' Fender Jazzmaster, combined with unusual guitar tunings (à la Sonic Youth) and a delay based effect known as reverse reverb. Such attention to detail was what created such a unique and often imitated guitar sound. On the other side of the coin, the production on Isn't Anything is very poor. The drums, in particular, sound very muffled and dull, definitely lacking in high frequencies. In fact the album in general suffers from a lack of clarity in the production.

If you are asking me ( and lets face it you are not and thankyou) this e.p ( do people still make e.p's?) is the high water mark of Kevin Shields musical fireworks, it is truly innovative music,particularly in the case of the first track and the last track, the sound of 'to here knows when' is quite extraordinairy, its shifting surface is blistering and bursting with sounds that are very hard to place in terms of guitar parts ,bass line and so on, the drums are there at the bottom tip tapping away absurdly lightly when compared to the mountain of sound they hold in place (just), and the vocal part (s) are purposefully dense and elusive, although more often than not they ascend to the universally understood land of oooh, make no bones about it this is heady ...
