Evil Urges

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date June 09, 2008
My morning Jacket never fail me. I wasn't impressed with Evil Urges on the first couple of listens, I suppose it wasn't what I was expecting if I'm honest but with each listen it grew on me. I now love it with the exception of one song, Highly Suspicious. It's got a nice soul sound in places, sometimes to my ears sounds a little Lenny Kravitz/Prince like on some of the songs. Yeah, Great Album and Great live band if you get a chance to see them. Worth a buy!

Z

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date October 17, 2005
Over four albums My Morning Jacket have fashioned a sound that embraces widescreen emotionalism with rootsy Americana, pyschedelia and alt-country. `Z` sees My Morning Jacket broaden their influences while retaining the unifying use of reverb that makes all the songs sound unmistakably them now matter how far they stray from the alt-country template. Recorded in a grain silo or not, veteran producer John Leckie should probably be recognized for maintaining the sultry Kentucky mood while Jim James and co. toy with white boy soul (Wordless Chorus), Clash-style punk-reggae (Off the Record) or stadium power pop (Gideon). MMJ's Phil Spector-esque use of reverb affords a cerain abstraction - even distance - to even their most tangential enterprises, and allows ... Read More:

The Tennessee Fire

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date January 01, 2005
loved it from the moment i heard it. the low fi sound quality took me back to the days when i was in various bands myself. Its not a barrier to enjoying the songs, but it has to be said that people expecting a well produced album wont get it. The drums are recorded with one microphone by the sounds of things, although the vocal and guitars fare better sound wise.

MMJ are a great modern rock band, but this shows their roots better than any other of their albums. its not their best album, but its an essential purchase. Its got that bedroom demo feeling, back in a pre- mass-internet time where people actually recorded their demo's on tape.

for fans only.. perhaps... though it did make me a fan.

At Dawn

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date January 01, 2005
The first thing you notice when listening to `At Dawn' if, like me, you've approached their back catalogue, er, backwards, is how faithful it is to a kind of alt-country orthodoxy when compared to the more magpie-like tendencies of `It Still Moves' and `Z'. Arguably it is more a consistency of mood than genre, given that it rarely rocks out in the ways that they later afforded themselves, but their sultry Kentucky twangcore does embrace languid Beach Boys harmonies and reggae among other appropriated musical tinges. The tempo is invariably unhurried and spacious, all reverb and humid ambience - there is a palpable sense of Kentucky's electrically-charged summer air - even if the sound is a little more polished than that of its successor.

Once again, `At Dawn' sees ... Read More:

Acoustic Citsuoca

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date June 09, 2008
My Morning Jacket have always been a curiously schizophrenic outfit; live they rock with crazy prog-infused energy whilst on record they make tranquil, gorgeous tunes soaked in heartbreak and reverb. Jim James' voice is perhaps the most incredible of all the alt. country groups sounding expansive and soulful, their first album was recorded in a disused grain silo to provide the perfect acoustics to amplify this effect. In this low key ep they combine these two elements to devastating effect, it is a recording of five of their most mornful and touching songs performed live at a private gig at the Startime Pavilion in Braintree (Massachusetts, not Essex). These stripped down acoustic versions of songs, which are already very bare, are harrowing and hyptonising but 'Hopefully' and 'Bermuda Highway' ... Read More:

Okonokos [Live]

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date October 02, 2006
My Morning Jacket's studio albums are a bit patchy in places, never quite living up to their initial promise. Often fond of including lengthy jams and work-outs, some of their material seems like it would have been more fun to play than to listen to.

"Okonokos" suffers from no such complaints. This is a double live album the way they used to make them. The sound quality is amazing, and every note just sparkles. The double album format allows them to really stretch out and show the different sides to their character, and there is rarely a note wasted.

There is no radical reinvention to be found here, but rather than just getting perfectly played versions of the album tracks, we get all the bruised glory of these songs, occasional mistakes and all, which lets them really ... Read More:

Z

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date June 02, 2008
Z is a great album! MMJ seem only to ever get better even after having changed band members. Their core sound has not differed and the music is awesome.
I instantly loved this album, the first track is Excellent to say the least and then following onto 'It beats for you' (ahhh such a lovely song).
I have to confess that this is not my favourite MMJ Album. 'At Dawn' is the one that does it for me and 'It Still Moves' stands out as one of the best MMJ albums around.
A great Album but not the best one by MMJ however, if i were to recommend a first buy then this would be it. It is mellow at times, certainly sweet at times but mostly - IT ROCKS!!

My Morning Jacket - Okonokos - The Concert [2006]

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date October 30, 2006
A stunning live set showcasing much of their critically accliamed record 'Z' and previous records - I've only seem MMJ live once and that was at The Royal Festival Hall as a warm up act for Love in 2003. The 2 hours on this record will convert any doubters and anyone with any MMJ records must buy this DVD - the best music dvd of 2006 by a country mile. Buy it.

It Still Moves

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date September 08, 2003
Only recently discovered MMJ after seeing them at Hop Farm Festival.I was amazed how cool they were with that alternative country vibe coupled with great vocals. They like to jam it up too.
I've now bought the last 4 studio albums and I agree with Kingrizla and MJ Hulme that this one is the best.It may not have the best production but it has the attitude and some of their classic material. The slower stuff will go down well if you like the Fleet Foxes.Believe me if you are into My Morning Jacket your collection is lost without this album.Take me to Okonokos!!

Chapter 1 The Sandworm Cometh: Early Recordings

by: My Morning Jacket

Release Date November 29, 2004
Released on the back of 3 studio albums since 1999 (Tennessee Fire, At Dawn and It Still Moves) Chapter One: The Sandworm Cometh and Chapter Two: Learning are a look back at some of the pre-1999 MMJ recordings previously only available on singles and other compilations.

The dual release is both fantastically interesting and incredibly enjoyable to boot. The records highlight the formative years of the developing genius that is Jim James. In general the songs fall into 3 distinct categories; early recordings and demos of tracks that later appear on Tennessee Fire and At Dawn, other less familiar tracks and some well known covers.

Fans of the under produced sound of the Tennessee Fire album are in for a treat with these 2 albums with a real loose tinny sound reverberating throughout ... Read More:
