Do I not like this CD. She puts on a grating voice which is combined with a strange recording balance to put me right off. And anyone who can sing 'From a distance' about the Christian God knows nothing about Him at all.

Ruby's Torch

For me, this just scrapes a fourth star. My main irritation with it is the inclusion of two Nanci standards that really didn't need recording again.
The rest is nice, a bit safe, but nice.
I was intrigued to hear NG's version of the classic Crystal Gayle 'When I dream'. She does a decent job of it, but like all the songs here, doesn't exactly redefine it.
I expect it was the reaction to 'In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning' (recorded previously) that made Nanci do this record. It's on here too, and is probably my favourite, along with 'Please Call Me Baby' and 'Drops From the Faucet'. It's good to hear Nanci singing properly and reminding us what a deep and expressive tone she can adopt when she isn't torturing her own material. ... Read More:

This is the most perfect album of covers you could hope to buy. This is so perfect that it brings tears of joy to my eyes (now that's rare). In act, it is a perfect album!
This is Nanci at her absolute best. The choice of songs is wonderful. My particular favourite? - all 17! Her choice of, and the singing by the harmony vocalists - Iris Dement, Emmylou Harris and John Prine, amongst others - is sensational; bearing in mind Nanci is singing at her most beautiful, this is faultless.

My collection of Nanci's music is rising quickly, but she will need to go some, to beat this beauty.

Now where's the remote - I need to hit the Repeat button....

If Ray Davies is the grandfather of Brit Pop, then when the next generation of new country comes along, Nanci Griffith will stand out as the Grandmother of her genre. This is Nanci Griffith at her magnificent best with an album of rare beauty, both in terms of poetic and melodic excellence.

Many of the songs are tender and evocative, even to the extent that a quintessentially English person can live the life the songs portray. One Fair Summer Evening

I don't honestly think i've heard a better live acoustic album than this one. Everything is exactly where it should be. The fragile but expressive voice. The emotionally charged melodies and subject matter. The supremely accomplished, but subtle accompaniment of the Blue Moon Orchestra. Hell, even the one bum note she hits in 'wing and the wheel' just adds to the emotional honesty of this performance. Amongst her best albums, and probably the finest recorded live performance i've ever heard committed to compact disc.

Lone Star State of Mind

Bette Midler had the big international hit, Cliff Richard had a big UK hit and Kathy Mattea recorded a country version (albeit with bagpipes) but Nanci Griffith recorded the original version of From a distance. Although Nanci wrote much of her own material, this is one that she didn't write. Nevertheless, it gave Nanci a massive career boost and remains the song that she is best remembered for.

This was the first of four albums that Nanci recorded for MCA. Note that all four have been re-packaged as a double-CD in the UK although they vary in style so some people may still prefer to buy this as a separate CD. Storms

I bought this album after Lone Star State Of Mind whetted my appetite for Nanci's music and at first I hated it, so much so that I left it aside for years until reviewing my music collection after acquiring an ipod, and now its become a favourite. Whilst not at her best here, there are some gems if you look past the purist view and accept Phil Everly's synthesiser contribution and the occasionally intrusive drum machine rythms. As an opening track, "I don't wana talk about love" disappoints, but "Drive In Movies and Dashboard Lights" is well crafted and pure Nanci family moralisation. Nanci's love affair with Ireland kicks off an otherwise interesting "It's a hard life..". (Why do Americans always sound like John Wayne in the Quiet Man whenever Ireland is mentioned...?)The ... The Last of the True Believers

Frankly, this is the best darned record she has done. I have most of the others as well.......nothing, but nothing, has changed my mind yet..!
I can play this record anytime and it always evokes memories of my youth - when I first heard it.. If any record makes that kind of impression that long ago then I can't fail to rate it as a five...
