Let me sum this album up for you: it is the best album that's been released in the 21st Century so far. I'm not kidding! Nas has always shown glimpses of greatness but he's not managed to be really consistent since his excellent debut Illmatic. He's only had 'moments' of greatness. But then came Hip Hop Is Dead which was a very very strong CD. I feared Nasty Nas would fall off again and retreat to making mediocre tunes but he came back even harder with Untitled. Wow! His lyrical genius, cleverness and uniqueness are fully shown off here. Listen to Jay-Z or Lil' Wayne and then listen to this and you will see that Nas is simply in a league of his own. Although he dropped out of school aged 13, he's clearly managed to educate himself well. ... Read More:

If there is one album in hip-hop history that should be heard by every music fan then it is Nasir Jones' Illmatic, released in 1994. Although this album is over a decade old, it still stands head and shoulders above anything that is being released today. Why? It has the two key components of a great rap album, fantastic production and incredible lyricism.
Some people may be put off by the short track listing, only 10 tracks (1 of which is an intro) but don't be. Although the album is only about 40 minutes long, it is 40 unforgettable minutes that you will want to hear over and over again.
From a lyrical perspective, this album has probably never been equaled. Whether it is multi's, wordplay, internal rhyming, story-telling, whatever you ... Read More:

compared to i am and nastradamus, this is a step ahead- compared to illmatic and some moments of it was written, still wack.
Release Date August 30, 1999
For his second album, It Was Written, Nas hired a bunch of hip-hop's biggest producers -- including Dr. Dre, DJ Premier, Stretch, and Trackmasters -- to help him create the musical bed for his daring, groundbreaking rhymes. Although that rhyme style isn't as startling on It Was Written as it was on his debut, Illmatic, Nas has deepened his talents, creating a complex series of rhymes that not only flow, but manage to tell coherent stories as well. Furthermore, Nas often concentrates on creating vignettes about life in the ghetto that never are apolitical or ambivalent. This time around, the production is more detailed and elaborate, which gives the music a wider appeal. Sometimes this is a detriment -- Nas sounds better when he tries to keep it street-level - ... This is definitely Nas's best album (so far). Yeah everyones like Illmatic blah blah blah...but this is so timeless. I would rate every track at four or five stars. I loved the music, the featured artists like Chrisette Michelle, Will.I.Am etc, and of course Nas's legendary lyrics. Buy it !!!!

This album proved to me that Nas was, is, and always will be a cut above most other artists (in the entire music scene).
At the time in their careers where most rappers are either contemplating retirement to enjoy their lives with the proceeds of mediocre lyricism, or pushing half-hearted efforts out to bump up their bank balances and add another plaque to the wall, Nas gives us this classic. From the long list of quality albums he's made, this one stands up near the top, only being bettered by Illmatic. The lyricism is once again flawless, educational and not material-obsessed and misogynistic like other hip-hop artists. Heaven, Made You Look, Get Down: brilliant tracks, and the beats are fantastic as well, which is something Nas albums aren't usually known ... Read More:
