The first New York Dolls album is a fun collection of rock n' roll songs, but it really suffers from a lack of low end. The bass is almost inaudible even on my super bass heavy home stereo. That concern aside, what you're left with is an otherwise nicely produced record, with some well executed and fun ideas. The only real negative is the phase effect on the drums in "Vietnamese Baby".
Most of the songs on the record are based around that rhythm guitar style that Chuck Berry made famous, and that you'll hear on a lot of Status Quo records. Unfortunately, I'm not a fan of it. Nor am I a fan of the Rolling Stones, and there's a definite nod in that direction. You have to admire the Dolls' attitude though, and their ear for a good ... Read More:

In a now (in)famous appearance in 1973 for the BBC's music programme The Old Grey Whistle Test the decidedly unimpressed presenter Bob Harris dismissively introduced the New York Dolls as pale imitators of the Rolling Stones and as 'mock rock'. Rock 'N Roll, dovetailing the whole of their cocky, confident debut album with the lion's share of its underrated follow-up Too Much Too Soon, convincingly shows Harris's cheap jibes to be fallacious. As Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye remarks in his adulatory liner notes: "They were a bridge between generations, a missing link, a ragged glory that would replicate itself endlessly through rock's successive generations, from the Ramones-Clash-Sex Pistols axis through the Smiths... and Nirvana".

Well i didn't know what i was gonna make of this, but this version of the New york Dolls are so HOt they're CooL! Nothing ropey about this. Amazing lyrics, Great Cover, Cool songs. Don't bother trying comparing it to the equally brilliiant 'New york Dolls' or 'Too Much Too Soon' - its just too different in a mega way. incredible album worthy of the name.

If you have you know what you're getting with this one. Perhaps the New York Dolls would have evolved and diversified if they hadn't fallen apart as they did, but this album isn't much of a representation of that. That probably sounds like a criticism, but I assure you it's not. The first album, "New York Dolls" was a great album, and another brush with the pop/punk/glam formula that made it what it was is a welcome one, it's not like they released a huge body of work in their short and self-destructive lifespan.
Perhaps this album contains a little more of the cynical humour the band offered so effectively, but it's only a magnification of an existing element, not any great change.
So if you heard and liked the first album, then get this one. If you didn't ... Read More:

First, the songlist on this site is incorrect. I suspect the record company gave Amazon the wrong info. Two Dolls originals, "It's Too Late" and "Mystery Girls", as well as four covers ("Piece Of My Heart", "My Girlish Ways", "Pills", and "Out In The Street") are NOT on this CD. Including them would have necessitated a second disk. As several of these songs were among the highlights of the recent Dolls shows, this was a bit disappointing to me.
That said, this was a superb live show! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd live to hear these old classics played with such intensity by at least some of the original guys in the band. David Jo's voice has aged considerably over the past 30 years, but for the better. Syl and the new guy Steve Conte do a great ... Read More:
