Jesus Of Cool

by: Nick Lowe

Release Date February 18, 2008
This is Nick Lowe's first album under his own name ( afaik ) reissued & enhanced with bonustracks, remastered & repackaged on CD ( also available on LP for us vintage buffs ). The bonustracks have been released as "The Wilderness years" ( @ least most of them ) & are just as good as the "proper" album-songs - I missed "Let's go to the disco" though, maybe this little Lowe/Edmunds-ditty will see the light again on another reissue ?

For me this album more or less defined the term "power-pop" when it first came out in 1978 - catchy refrains, combined with sometimes odd arrangements & corny, but well fitting sound-effects + Lowe's trademark production. It's a shame this album has been unavailable for so long - hopefully ... Read More:

At My Age

by: Nick Lowe

Release Date June 04, 2007
Okay, so we had to wait six years since Nick Lowe's last offering on the wonderful Convincer. I am pleased to announce that At My Age is worth waiting for. Hope For Us All and The Other Side Of The Coin benefit from Lowe's life experience and vocally he is spot on. I Trained Her To Love Me kicks women well below the belt. Better Man gives us all, especially us men, hope for the future. Love it.

The Convincer

by: Nick Lowe

Release Date September 03, 2001
A convincer is a con artist whom convinces the mark that he wishes to part with his wealth. I was convinced to buy this album from the name Nick Lowe alone but after `Dig My Mood' was part expecting to feel a little short changed but was pleasantly surprised.

The album starts strongly with Nick's `Homewrecker' and the perfectly selected cover `Only a Fool Breaks his Own Heart' and just when you think things can't get any better `Lately I've Let Things Slide' raises the standard with one of Nick's best ever songs.

`She's Got Soul' slows things down and with `Cupid Must Be Angry' a soulful country groove carries the album through some of its weaker moments, which are still stronger than most other albums released in 2001.

Labour of Love: the Music of Nick Lowe

by: Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Charlie Musselwhite, Tom Petty, Joe Louis Walker, Marshall Crenshaw, Graham Parker, Guy Davis, Greg Brown

Release Date October 22, 2001
Labour of Love casts attention on a facet of Nick Lowe's talent that's surprisingly uncelebrated--his songwriting prowess. Having made his mark as a producer, performer, and sideman, Lowe's skills as a singer-songwriter have been taken for granted, but, as this tribute confirms, Nick has long possessed a knack for mating blissful hooks with pithy couplets. Here an assortment of players and singers from a range of genres tackle Lowe gems dating from his new wave heyday up through his brilliant late-'90s comeback. Proving the adaptability of Lowe's material is half the fun here, as Joe Louis Walker turns the '70s anthem ("What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding" into a midtempo soul lament, "Half a Boy and Half a Man" is transformed by Sleepy ... Basher: The Best of Nick Lowe

by: Nick Lowe

Release Date September 20, 1989
This was the first CD I ever bought. Honest. When you only have one CD to your name, 'cos you've just bought a CD player, it should be a good one. This is such a CD. There are generous scoops from every period of Lowe's solo career - lovingly compiled from his growing mass of work on the Demon label.

I used to firmly believe that if there was such a thing as a pop genius, then Nick Lowe was it. From his first single on the Stiff label (up on my wall at home) right to date, I have always enjoyed his music. As for this disc, well, everything you could want is on it. From 'So it goes' right through to the fabulous later work on 'Pinker and Prouder Than Previous' and 'Rose of England'.

This CD became sort of half redundant as I later bought the remainder of ... Read More:

Impossible Bird

by: Nick Lowe

Release Date January 12, 1995
`Party of One' didn't give Reprise the return it was looking for and so Nick was released to release `The Impossible Bird' on Nick Riviera's Demon records which was at that time also handling over old Stiff act's like Ian Dury as well as managing Elvis Costello's back catalogue.

And so `The Impossible Bird' was quite low key and its mellow tone makes for an understated album, this has lead to it being an overlooked classic.

And classic is certainly is dripping with honeyed soulful country ballads such as the opener `Soulful Wind'. `The Beast in Me', which Nick originally wrote for Johnny Cash, is one of the strongest songs on the album, showcasing Nick's song writing talent. The covers `True Love Travels On a Gravel Road', `Trail of Tears' and especially ... Read More:
