Although his two biggest and most famous hits (Everybody's talking, Without you) are by other songwriters, Nilsson (born Harry Nelson) wrote a number of songs that became successful for others.
The Yardbirds were the first major act to record one of Nilsson's songs (Ten little Indians) but Nilsson didn't give up his day job (at a bank) until he heard another of his songs (Cuddly toy) on the radio, performed by the Monkees. More recordings followed including Story of rock'n'roll (Turtles), Without her (Blood sweat and tears) and - most important of all - One (Three Dog Night), which became a huge American hit.
Nilsson finally got his break as a recording artist with Everybody's talking, a cover of a Fred Neil Song that was ... Read More:

A Little Touch of Schmilsson in the Night
This album was released in 1973, many years before albums of pop standards by people like Michael Buble and Robbie Williams became popular.
As such some people didn't know what to make of it at the time, and it was only modestly successful but 35 years on it still sounds timeless.
This has to be one of the most relaxing albums ever made along with John Martyn's Solid Air, and is definitely one to play late at night when one is in a contemplative mood, and this release also includes the outtakes that were released 15 years later
as A Touch More Schmilsson In The Night.
These outtakes are especially welcome as 'A Touch More' has long been out of print and is now very hard to ... Read More:

I still have my LP of The Point but like other reviewers I have great memories of the brilliant classic cartoon and would be thrilled to have the opportunity to see it again, or better still, to buy it.
I dreamed I was in The Land of the Point. I asked for the DVD in a shop. The manager said to me "You're the third custome today that I've told that stocking that DVD would be pointless because there is no demand for it."

This being Harry Nilsson's most popular album (garnering three major hits), is Harry's most entertaining album. Every song is upbeat containing romantic, rock, silly and torch songs filling your ears. "Down" pushes the envelope of reckless rythym and blues abandon, while "Jump Into The Fire" showcases the same frantic voice working a drum/bass line that never lets up. "Without You" is his most known song, a true tear-jerker and "Coconut" will make you laugh or drive you nuts. Finishing off with the romantic "I'll Never Leave You", Harry Nilsson pulls on your heart strings. Richard Perry did a marvelous job of production; probably one of his best and for the perfect voice.

I'm surprised to see that nobody has submitted a review for this album, perhaps younger people may feel the songs on this album are a bit dated? I first listened to this album when it was released in 1973, I was then 24 years old, so age doesn't really matter, I thought it was brilliant then & having now just bought & listened again to the CD, it hasn't lost any of its appeal. These are classic standards that lot's of people will sing along with even if they think they didn't know them, this album is the original major late night chill out album with your bottle(s) of wine. It now contains all the outakes previously unissued along with a very informative inlay booklet which gives a ton of information about the creation of this classic album. A great ... Read More:

I put this on my wish list because I thought I should have a recording of music from Peer Gynt. What I didn't expect was be to be really moved by the music. I was. It just sounds "right". At the price, a real bargain!

Whether writing great songs, or simply doing a cover of someone else's masterpieces, Nilsson was up there with the best of them.
He had such a romantic and melodic touch; you often melt away with the sheer beauty of some of his deliveries.
"All I Think About Is You", "Moonbeam Song", "Blanket For A Sail".......the list is endless, and they're all here on this wonderful collection.
This perfectly squares the circle when you add it to his other completely different triumph "As Time Goes By".
Get both albums. Forget the talking and start the listening!

There's never been anyone in rock and pop remotely like the late great Harry Nilsson (though his old pal Jimmy Webb might share a few resemblances). Here we have Harry's two finest albums one one value for money disc: 1969's 'Harry' is full of great, idiosyncratic lyrics, matched with sunshiney, though never facile, melodies. 1970's 'Nilsson meets Newman' is nothing less than the meeting and audio marriage of two loveably quirky talents, who seemed made for each other.
Nothing more need be said: if you've never heard Nilsson before (or are only familiar with him via the ubiquitous 'Without You'), this is an ideal introduction.
