The Slip + DVD

In a discussion recently I remarked to a friend how Nine Inch Nails are the only band who [in my opinion] have never made a bad album. However, I now take my comment back. While the production of the album is first rate, the songs fall far from the industrial noise come conceptual evolutions that have propelled Trent Reznor through the last decades. The opening track (999,999) gives intriguing promise, only to give way to the disappointing melodic electronica that doesn't subside. There is one diamond in the rough though; The Four of us in Here Are Dying. However this instrumental is not enough to rescue the sinking ship that is 'the slip'. Ghosts I-IV

I'm new to the Trent Reznor fan club, having heard 'Spiral' years ago, which left me cold. The lyrics didn't gel and i couldn't relate to someone that depressed.

Having started my NIN purchases with Year Zero, the level of expectation hovers above reasonable, but 'Ghosts' does not disappoint. If you're a fan you own it, and you can download it for $5 on the NIN website.

One thing i have to comment on though is the NIN fanclub - hilarious! Even Amazon states in reviews for both 'Ghosts' and the fantastic follow-up 'The Slip' that they're the greatest releases by NIN - seems no-one can make up their minds.

Just enjoy - who cares which release is best?
If they're good they're good - and they are.

Year Zero

Released only two years after comeback album With Teeth, Year Zero is a concept album set in the future with a guest apperance from his new buddy Saul Williams.

The album is not for the faint of heart so fall out boy fans can stop reading now you wont find any ready made coporate radio rock here.

From the opening of hyperpower the album never lets up and features some of Reznors heaviest work to date before ending peacefullywith zero sum.

If your a nin fan get this now, if your not do yourself a favour and get it to futher your music education.

The Downward Spiral

I first got the album on cassette not long after it came out in 1994 at the age of 14, and I am not ashamed to say I was pushed towards it by seeing NIN tracks on beavis & butthead!!

At the time, I think I was listening to Jesus Jones, Blur, some metal, Megadeth, Anthrax etc. Putting it on in mother's car on the way back from town I think it nearly made her crash it. Mr Self Destruct was a nasty piece of work to say the least, but now it just seems the norm. Then we had Piggy, not a bad little slow one. By the time we got to Heresy, I think it got turned off to be "listened to at home".

Anyway, that's enough sentimental rubbish, this album has stood the test of time, definitely. Don't get me wrong, I still dig the hard Depeche style sound ... Read More:

With Teeth

In my younger days when PHM and TDS were doing the rounds i was purely into rock and had no taste for electronica, and never really discovered i actually liked NIN til the last couple of years. By the time i heard With Teeth tho i was much more familiar with the bands other material, and so i was left with the impression that this album wasn't a brand new studio album in its own right but more a collection of outtakes taken from the PHS, TDS and The Fragile sessions, re-recorded/remastered for With Teeth.
Reznor's undeniable genius is evident in a few of the tracks; the title track With Teeth and Right Where It Belongs being my particular favorites, alot of the material harkens back to the previous different eras of NIN so strongly i was just left with the feeling ... Read More:

The Fragile

Its amazing to think that 'The Fragile' divides fans of nin, with some saying its his best and most challenging work and with others unable to appreciate the complex nature of 'The Fragile'.

'The Fragile' was released in 1999 five years after the much loved and highly successful 'The Downward Spiral' into a music world that was dominated at the time by nu metal and boybands. Its release should have really saved us from the world of 35 year old men pretending they were 18, and 18 year olds making a bunch of grey haired men in an office rich. Despite a strong start it faded away quickly, missed by many fans as a result.

The album itself is a double and while most double albums dont make sense, 'The Fragile' would have been lost as single album. The album starts ... Read More:

Pretty Hate Machine

thankfully 'A Customer' and 'Toybum' don't represent the great majority of NIN fans who think Pretty Hate Machine, 'Excellence of its time'. It's not Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle, it's not so many things other than being a fantastic slab of tech-industrial metal by a young guy called Trent Reznor.

All that 'A Customer' hates is what makes THIS customer love the album. I don't regard there being a duff track. There has been plenty of music since by NIN that has made me raise my eyebrows, thinking 'Hmmm, not sure about that'.

Y34RZ3r0r3mix3d + DVD

After listening to NIN now for 4 years, I have every album but may not know them them as well as the 'older' generation who have grown up with NIN music, but I can safely say that I do love Nine Inch Nails as much as the biggest fan.

So, I hear about Year zero remixed, I already have 'Year Zero' and I thought the whole concept was brilliant. The noise, the rhythm, just everything. And from the other remixes 'fixed, further down...etc. I knew this one would be just as good. Then I find out it's different artists, their own interpretations of the songs.

The remixes are good. But I would have loved to have heard Trent's versions, his remixes. There are some really stand out tracks for me,these are:

The Downward Spiral [Deluxe Edition] [HYBRID SACD]

I love NIN have done for years and this is my first SACD and frankly I am still recovering, it is awsome. I would say CD's are the past but looking at the titles available for SACD's maybe not. Why has this format never taken off, I don't get it?. So many things you have never heard right there in your face, its the mutts nuts. Buy it, buy it now!

Broken EP

This mini album is almost the complete opposite of Nine Inch Nails' debut "Pretty Hate Machine". The angry lyrics are still there, but this time round Trent has swapped his funky synths, laid back vocals and dancey beats and loops for thrashing guitars and a fair lot of screaming. It was on this EP that Trent discovered the electric guitar and he later combined the two sounds of "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Broken" to create his own individual sound that appeared on his masterpiece "The Downward Spiral".

"Broken" begins with "Pinion", which is less of a song and more of a grinding, angry, instrumental introduction to "Wish".
