When the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band embarked on this project, they invited Bill Monroe to take part but he declined. He regretted that decision once he heard the album, which took him and everybody else by surprise. While Bill was absent, other top country and bluegrass singers and musicians participated. These included Mother Maybelle Carter, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Roy Acuff, Merle Travis and Jimmy Martin. Nobody intended that a triple LP would be released but all the participants had so much fun recording together that they recorded a lot more material than they originally intended. This album (I purchased the LP when it first came out & then purchased the CD when it came out) is a "must have" to any bluegrass or country music lover. This album brings together the legends of bluegrass with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB). Buy volume II too. Now, if only NGDB will issue "Dirt, Silver & Gold" on CD.

Before "Down From The Mountain" and "O Brother Where Art Thou" celebrated and revived rootsy Americana and bluegrass, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band were recording some of the same tunes with the original pioneers in 1971. Roy Acuff, Chet Atkins, The Carter Family, Vassar Clements, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson and Merle Travis (to name but a few) came together with a bunch of hippies for a historic recording in Nashville, resulting in the double album "Will The Circle Be Unbroken". Almost 20 years later, a second volume was recorded with traditionalists like Johnny Cash, Levon Helm, Emmylou Harris, Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman. There are three Circle collections. General opinion is that the first album is the best, the third album is a close second and that this is the weakest of the three. I love all three but this one particularly appeals to me. It has many traditional musicians and singers but also a few less obvious singers like John Denver, Levon Helm (of the Band), John Prine, Roger McGuinn (of the Byrds), Paulette Carlson (of Highway 101) and Bruce Hornsby. Perhaps it is the presence of such guests that some dislike but you can't please everybody.
