Originally billed as the Nolan Sisters, this Irish group first made an impact on the British public via television. Their first album, 20 giant hits, was a collection of covers of UK pop hits. After that, their albums were a mix of covers and original material, which yielded eight UK hits. While that covers album was an easy listening collection, their subsequent music was lightweight, danceable pop music.

Their first hit, Spirit body and soul, only made the thirties but their remaining hits all made the top twenty. 1001 Nights: Four stories from Arabian Nights

The story teller is fabulous, really drawing you into the story. Thestory is then followed with the piece of music reflecting the story. Itis a brilliant format. My 5 year old loves being allowed to listen tothe story and then the music as part of the calm down before he goes tobed. Although small children will enjoy it, the presentation and musicisn't in the least simplistic or child like.

Super Hits

For me, this is the perfect Nolans collection. As a kid, i played the 'Making waves' LP to death and one day hoped the songs would make it onto CD. I've been fooled in the past by other nolans 'best ofs' and 'Greatest hits' which turned out to be re-recordings of the original songs. On this CD though you get the original songs, issued by Sony Music and polished for digital and guess what, they still sound fantastic - many happy memories re-appear!!! For those of you that dont want album fillers and re-recorded songs, this CD is perfect for you.

J Strauss: Die Fledermaus

This recording of Strauss' masterwork of comedy, Die Fledermaus, is just wonderful. Joan Sutherland is just SO funny! People who say she can't act are sadly deluded...Maria Callas could never be so funny, not if she tried her hardest! Joan has such an intuitive understanding of the layers of humour and timing, delivery and quipping are second to none. She also lends her humoungous high notes to the ends of the ensembles which are often left out by sopranos like Te Kanawa who can't get up there, which is a shame as it seems a bit of an anti-climax to go down at the end. Overall, Joan Sutherland's performance is supreme, no-one sings the Czardas like her! Who else pulls off the coloratura passages in the Friscka section at the end, sounds so rich in ... Read More:

20 Giant Hits

These Irish sisters had a series of UK hits between 1979 and 1982, which can be found in a separate compilation, but before that, they introduced themselves to the British public with a covers album, 20 giant hits. This album was later re-issued on CD with one alteration - Money money money (Abba) was replaced by Something tells me something is gonna happen tonight (Cilla Black), which was presumably recorded at the same sessions as the original 20 tracks. I always loved this album - indeed, I actually prefer the Nolans singing these covers to their later hits. The songs were all huge UK hits in the sixties or the seventies. Disco Party Classics
