News lights on a rejuvenated British Jazz scene, Nostalgia 77 come through with perhaps their strongest effort yet with Weapons of Jazz Destruction. Excellent musicianship combined with versatility combine to make a hugely enjoyable listen. I love the cool, seductive "Stars." The pace switches quickly to the rattling stomp of "Journey Home." The onus is on swinging grooves that have you tapping your feet, the music tight in its structure. Musical Silt goes elsewhere for its rhythm, African bongos make the track dart along.
"If at first," really stands out for me, a beautiful aching crescendo, the track effortlessly spinning out of the middle section. There's real maturity there.
Highly recommened.

Nostalgia 77, by all accounts a bedroom studio-boffin, produces a brooding, claustrophobic - if sometimes derivative - debut. To tick a few boxes, this echoes some of DJ Shadow's sparser material, a more-reflective RJD2, 'Meiso'-period DJ Krush, a less-lush Broadway Project, DJ Cam, Bonobo and latter-day Four Tet - to name a few. A funereal concept runs through this record, which layers dark piano chords, scratching and chopped-up double bass over raw, methodical hip-hop beats. 'The Conventicle' splices gnarly guitar licks together over its gently building but malevolent four minutes while the more-upbeat 'Rain Walk' ends in spools of raw saxophone. Improvised sax makes a further appearance in Metamorphoses - which builds layers of fugged-up ... Read More:

Anyone who is viewing this having already purchased "Songs For My Funeral" should be slightly hestiant! Not in a bad way but just that this is totally different and earth shattering stuff.
This album is really special. Drawing from songs from N77's "The Garden", Benedic has enlisted 7 special talents to really bring his music to life. (amazing A & R here from Robert Luis)
This is "21st century Jazz" as Luis puts it himself on the back of the sleeve. Meeshing Mike Ladd with Mingus and Cinematic Orchestra with the frenetic pace of Jaga Jazzist. Merging all types of styles from hip/hop to gospel this encompases jazz and all the music its touched since its birth!!!
Buy this if you love Jazz, hip/hop, breaks, ... Read More:

The first two tracks are brilliant. "Cheney Lane" has a addictive and infectious beat. "Changes" is beautiful and simple (mad trumpet solos (and sax I think) over an old breakbeat and warm super-low bassline), and they both contain nice skillful sampling / playing. Still can't work it out, even having read the other reviews. Anyway, I would have bought the album for these two tracks only. I don't really like the next three or four tracks; it seems they sort-of ran out of inspiration. "Freedom" is a return to form, the break & the way the tune unfolds make me smile, and the horns are not too violent. "Seven Nation Army" is sung with real power, although it is heavy on guitar, whereas the rest of the album is heavy on brass. "The Garden" is a slower ... Read More:
