opeths ninth album is certainly more of the same but thats a good thing and they bring a better selection of tracks than on their previous album,ghost reveries,a controversial statement perhaps but this album flows better and has a better all round feel to it.
Anyway,the album opens up with 'coil' and is a mournful yet beautiful ballad that features mikael along with a female singer as they trade verses in what is certainly a haunting opener,perhaps it shouldnt work in terms of being an albums opener but it certainly does.
The next song could rank as one of the heaviest of their 18 year career,'heir apparent' features a vulgar riff and some of their most conventional drumming,more in line with metals take perhaps!

Still Life: +DVD

Many Opeth fans argue that Still Life is Opeth's best album. For me, it's their first proper album, with unarguably great production and a little more diversity on offer than before. It is also the first to feature the classic lineup of Akerfeldt and Lingdren on guitar, and Martins Lopez and Mendez on drums and bass. Still Life treads the line of heavy and mellow perfectly, from ridiculously deathy passages on Serenity Painted Death to the guitar heaven of Face Of Melinda. As Mike Akerfeldt himself has said, it's a very dense album; every song is chock full of music, intense instrumentation, ideas and life (no pun intended). It is without doubt a masterpiece, and paved the way for its spiritual sequel Blackwater Park a few years later.

Blackwater Park

This for me is a hugely rewarding and enjoyable album.

As I'm learning the guitar this is an absolute treasure trove of guitar styles. Everything from thrash metal, spanish guitar to gilmour-ish floydian lyricism. Usually all in one song too !

So full of ideas and somehow quite nostalgic in sound.

Oh wow, Drapery Falls just came on as I write this. Stunning. Sounds like a film score.

If dream theater are "the light side", these guys are definitely the dark.

As mentioned by others there is growling. But it works in the context.

Dream Theater meets Hammer House of Horror...

Damnation

All fans of good Rock music should find something to enjoy here, be they Metal or Progressive inclined. This is basically, a full album's worth of the more acoustic/reflective moments that enrich the likes of Still Life, Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries & Watershed.
If you are a die hard Death/Black Metal fan, then a WARNING:
THERE ARE NO DEATH METAL VOCALS/GRUNTS ON THIS ALBUM - AT ALL! NOT EVEN FOR A SECOND! It's COMPLETELEY Clean vocals, a progressive 70's vibe, lots of acoustic guitar, melodic bass guitar and plenty of keyboard/ mellotron. Akerfeldt's lyrics are very introspective, and in tune with the vibe of the album, and it's mature guitar work.
This is an album that will more likely appeal to fans of Pink Floyd, Rush and Marillion than Obituary ... Read More:

Ghost Reveries

Classic album - a landmark of Progressive/Death/Metal/Rock!
I have every album since 1999's Still Life and including Watershed - this for me is THE best of them all; production, performance and especially the songwriting. For me, this is the Prog Metal album that I had been waiting for since Master Of Puppets, WAY back in 1986!
It's dark, brooding, melancholic and very, very heavy. Yet it's also extremeley melodic, highly technical and haunting at times.
Vocals range from perfect, soulful clean textures to full on brutal Death growls, then there are the stunning riffs and emotive solos, bass lines that would please Cliff Burton looking down, and some of the most inventive double bass drums you will ever hear! Deliverance

Ok, let's do this track by track.

1) Wreath is maybe my least favorite Opeth song ever. I know that Mikael also doesn't like it. And it opens the album. It just shouldn't be here, it has nothing really to offer.

2) Deliverance. Things are getting much better now. This song is one of the heaviest Opeth tunes, and it rocks hard. It's a must hear I guess.

3) Fair Judgement is the album's "accoustic" song, and it's great. 10 minutes in total, and while nowhere near to their previous masterpiece "To bid you farewell", it's pretty good.

4) For absent friends, is a beautiful filler.

5) Master's apprentices, is again a long heavy tune and stands side by side with Deliverance as album's best songs.

Morningrise

As someone who has been into Opeth for some years now, I still cannot see the major appeal this album holds. It's an improvement over Orchid in terms of songwriting at least. There are still some very clumsy transitions, and even plenty of parts where they just stop, pause, and then play something completely different, but the songs as a whole feel like they have a kind of a shape, a beginning, middle, and end. To Bid You Farewell actually flows quite nicely and becomes quite hypnotic. The exception, however, is Black Rose Immortal. Opeth have never written anything as long as BRI before or since, though it's obvious why. The song is barely coherent; after about ten minutes they clearly start running out of ideas on how to make the song last longer, it keeps sounding like it's ended, only ... Read More:

I am reviewing this album about, oohh. three years too late but what the hell...Many Opeth fans are divided about this album, some say it's too polished and there is too much keyboards etc, i say otherwise. Opeth have never been Darkthrone and the kind of music that they make incorperates so many elements that it deserves the best production possible, of course this should'nt take anything away from the fact that their earlier material was fantastic as well, it's just that there were a different sounding band back then.I imagine that the critisim that this album has come under may have somehting to do with the fact that Opeth have signed to Roadrunner, a label which in recent years has been the home of such bands as Nickleback, Coal chamber, ill nino etc, so instantly people's backs were up, wondering whether ... Still Life [Digipak]

I don't think I'm wrong in stating that Opeth will be remembered as one of the best rock bands in the world, long after we all die and our childrens, childrens, children leave for Alpha Centauri!! Still Life is my favourite Opeth album so far. Just like all their albums it contains a whirlwind of musical styles and the whole gamut of human emotion, sometimes in one song! There is a stronger jazz element to this album amongst the usual metal and acoustic stylings. Once more I can't help descending into eulogies. Believe the hype, Opeth are the greatest metal band the world has known.

Still life stands as a big two fingers to all those who believe there is something intrinsically immature and brainless about Heavy Metal. How could you possibly slate this album and claim to be a music fan? Buy it now!
