The Roundhouse Tapes: Live

Let's leave aside the fact that I was there that cold November night, to see one of the great match-ups on any bill ie. Paradise Lost with Opeth to close. Super venue, super accoustics and of course super music.
There might be a tendancy to buy the live CD as a keep-sake and nothing more. But as a fan of both extreme metal and prog; this album really delivers.How The West Was Won, Past Lives , Space Ritual , Nothing Is Easy , Different Stages , Salival, Strangers in The Night , Seconds Out , Everything Louder... are all classic live albums; and here comes the shock. The Rounhouse Tapes can proudly stand alongside the aforementioned.

Ghost Reveries: Special Edition/+DVD

How I see it, there are three top Opeth albums, and I'm hard pressed to pick a favourite. 2001's Blackwater Park is often considered the benchmark release, and is certainly definitive in terms of their sound. 2005's Ghost Reveries sees the band at their most diverse, and this year's Watershed is overflowing with moments of absolute sonic perfection. Seeing as its still 2008, I'll plump for Watershed for the time being. But there's no doubt that every time I revisit Ghost Reveries, I end up doubting myself.

Still Life [Digipak]

To put it very, very bluntly indeed; this album is nothing short of a MASTERPIECE, definately Opeth's best work to date and one of the great albums of all time. Whilst I would say I prefer Blackwater Park and possibly M.A.Y.H in terms of the individual songs, the flow of this album is unparallelled and majestic. Everything sits perfectly; the whole thing is a testament to how talented Opeth are with dynamics and seamless movements from death metal to hauntingly beautiful acoustic. If you are new to Opeth, my suggestion is to go out and buy Blackwater Park and this. Anyone who is a fan of real genuine music cannot be disappointed

Blackwater Park: Limited Edition [VINYL]

Stunning music, full of originality...takes unexpected twists and turns, in equal measure slow and fast, light and heavy...yet always coherent. Add top quality sound production and this album is a stonewall classic.

The Candlelight Years

I agree entirely with the other reviewer here, at first i read his/her comments and thought n'ah they must have had a japanese version imported or something, but sure enough the entire inlay is illegible.

I have listened to the music and its awesome, especially 'Morningrise', but I have to say i am returning this and buying all 3 albums separately to get the full affect, ie the artwork and packaging.

The case is flimsy and will look tatty in no time.

Really all i can say is if you want to pick up the early stuff cheap and the above doesnt bother you then get it, at the end of the day i guess the music is most important but outside the cd's I just feel it lacks quality and quantity.

Watershed [VINYL]

There is no doubt that Opeth are one of the most truly original rock bands of all time. They may one day be looked upon as pioneers that stretched the boundaries of popular music, encompassing, as their albums do, swirling death metal cacophonies and gorgeous, organic folk rock.
Yet this album has not grabbed me as previous LP's 'Ghost Reveries', 'My Arms Your Hearse', 'Blackwater Park' and their peerless acoustic masterpiece 'Damnation', did.
Why? Because around 2001, Opeth became my favourite band, and consequently, I overdosed on them in a big way. I've played them to death. But this album does not let them down, or embarrass the legacy at all, yet i can't give it five stars, as i'm afraid to say, I have heard it before. Deliverance [VINYL]

Ok, let's do this track by track.

1) Wreath is maybe my least favorite Opeth song ever. I know that Mikael also doesn't like it. And it opens the album. It just shouldn't be here, it has nothing really to offer.

2) Deliverance. Things are getting much better now. This song is one of the heaviest Opeth tunes, and it rocks hard. It's a must hear I guess.

3) Fair Judgement is the album's "accoustic" song, and it's great. 10 minutes in total, and while nowhere near to their previous masterpiece "To bid you farewell", it's pretty good.

4) For absent friends, is a beautiful filler.

5) Master's apprentices, is again a long heavy tune and stands side by side with Deliverance as album's best songs.

Damnation

2003 and opeths seventh album,damnation was certainly a depature in style,a mellow,1970s prog rock sounding album mainly including acoustic guitars and if you want their usual death metal vocals then you will be left sad and hurt,this is clean vocals all the way.
Opeth are a band that im a big fan of ,i love the heaviness that they clearly possess but their prog rock sensibilities appeal to my melody driven side,they combine the two so well,here you get one side of the coin and it can certainly be called great but at the same time the word dull springs to mind in places as well.
The songs arent as long as typical tracks and that is a good thing,its just that some of the tracks dont convey emotions as they intend too,well not with me anyway.
