Still Life

by: Opeth

Release Date November 06, 2000
This is best death metal album with prog elements i have ever heard, and an all time death metal classic. It blends aggresive and melodic death metal riffs, with progressive rock influences that would not look out of place on a pink floyd album. On paper it may seem like a bad idea, however when left in the hands of Opeth they create a truely exeptional blend of the two styles. The complex riffage interlaced with acoustic and atmospheric passages presents an engaging musical journey for the listener. The more progressive elements provide a build up to the crushing death metal riffs that keeps the listener engaged for every second of the albums sixty plus minutes, while they are on the edge of their seat in anticipation of the next unexpected ... Stunning music, full of originality...takes unexpected twists and turns, in equal measure slow and fast, light and heavy...yet always coherent. Add top quality sound production and this album is a stonewall classic.

Deliverance

by: Opeth

Release Date February 10, 2003
Ok, let's do this track by track.

1) Wreath is maybe my least favorite Opeth song ever. I know that Mikael also doesn't like it. And it opens the album. It just shouldn't be here, it has nothing really to offer.

2) Deliverance. Things are getting much better now. This song is one of the heaviest Opeth tunes, and it rocks hard. It's a must hear I guess.

3) Fair Judgement is the album's "accoustic" song, and it's great. 10 minutes in total, and while nowhere near to their previous masterpiece "To bid you farewell", it's pretty good.

4) For absent friends, is a beautiful filler.

5) Master's apprentices, is again a long heavy tune and stands side by side with Deliverance as album's best songs.

Deliverance

by: Opeth

Release Date November 04, 2002
Over 7 albums you'd think you'd lose the pace a little. But it's not always the case.

Opeth, a traditional death metal band with progressive tendancies (well more than a tendacy), are just one of those bands that you know that come 15-20 years down the line, they might just be remembered. And although they'll never fill stadiums and provide absurd stage props, Opeth are easily as good as the genius that was Pink Floyd. Although you might think it difficult to compare such different bands, think again. Opeth have more than a love for progressiveness and provide melodic listenable tracks, just like Floyd did around 30 years ago. The difference is that Opeth are defined in a genre of music that scares people away due to church burnings, satanism and scary, scary ... Read More:

Damnation [Digipak]

by: Opeth

Release Date April 14, 2003
First off, for those of you who are new to Opeth, you need to know that this is the second half of their Deliverance/Damnation "experiment"; the former being the "heavy" album and more like their previous works, and the latter being the "mellow" album, a rather daring experiment, but one that I feel has paid off. I hadn't heard a single song off this album until I actually bought the album (other than a little sample they played at the end of the gig I went to), so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. After having listened to this album over and over since the day I bought it, I can say they pulled it off perfectly. At the moment, I feel "Damnation" may actually be the better half of the experiment (although "Deliverance" is a great album, too).

The standout song ... Read More:
