What a pure and simple JOY to hear those early Postcard singles ringing out like clarion bells, as well as some slightly more rough-edged versions of tunes re-recorded for the later Polydor album. Isn't this just exactly what great Pop music was all about ? Swoonworthy and recommended without hesitation.
Release Date July 30, 1992
I becasme interesting in Orange Juice after hearing 'Rip It Up' on the radio. I really did like that single so i thought i'd buy this 'best of' compilation as a way of delving straight into Orange Juice's portfolio...i was not dissapointed.
I found this is an album that requires a lot of listening to discover how good it really is. It was not an instant 'all these tracks are good' and in my opionion, this is a good thing because you don't get bored quickly. The quacking synthesiser bass on 'Rip it Up' is one of those timeless classics of the early 1980's. Edwyn Collins' inspired vocals warble along to the sound of his distinctive guitar sound, played loud and raw.
Not many groups or musicians are able to recapture the power and the glory of their early days. But Edwyn Collins is one exception. 'A Girl Like You' stormed the record charts a couple of years back, giving him the longevity and success he deserves.
One surprise on this compilation is the cover of 'The Witch Queen of New Orleans' that rocks along like a train.
The only omission that I would have liked to have seen on the album is 'Flesh of my Flesh' another classic Orange Juice track from the early 1980s.

The broader aspects of the career of Orange Juice - one of the most important indie acts of the early 80's pop scene - can be found on the recent retrospective compilation, The Glasgow School. By the time this album appeared, the band had already been together for half a decade and had released a handful of singles on the legendary Postcard label, before attempting to cut a more lo-fi debut in the form of Ostrich Churchyard, eventually released posthumously in 1992. The band scraped that garage-rock recording and decided to re-record a debut that drew more on sparking soul and pop inflections, set against the more traditional indie-style guitar sound. The result was You Can't Hide Your Love Forever... one of the best and most underrated ... Read More:
