So I eagerly awaited Amazon's delivery of this CD and I haven't been at all disappointed - it seems that this band have never released a weak song in their entire repertoire. This CD is a combination of the two albums, "Mouhamadou Bamba" (1980) and "Sibou Odia" (1981), so you get a full 72 minutes of Artisso, Cissokho, Seck et al doing their magical stuff. For those unfamiliar with the band, they are a joyous blend of the kind of Cuban sound found on Buena Vista Social Club and West African Wolof music and the resultant mix is a delight to the ear. Their sound is soft, melodic, joyous west African music at its best. This, their earliest available recording is absolutely phenomenal. Less polished than subsequent discs it more than makes up for this with a freshness and lilting ebullience that is impossible to resist. The sound quality is perhaps not the best but this is totally unimportant when confronted with one of the most beautiful, rapturous records that you will ever have the privilege of hearing. |

. Pirates Choiceby: Orchestre Baobab Release Date May 01, 1990 When that horrible term "World Music" first came to prominance this was one of the big popular items, and here it is back on CD. The orchestra are a Senegalese outfit who play African music with a cuban feel. They Rhumba gently and gently uplift you. (Sounds more like a plug for a bra than a band!) The album is called Pirates Choice because this stuff was so popular when it came out that it was ripped of right and left. This is a very welcome re-release for anyone who likes their African music to swing. |

This music transcends every day music. Listening to this music transcends everyday life. The guitarist is very, very special. This is an unusual collection of songs which deserves to be listened to forever. I can hear the yearning, accusation and regret in the singer's voice while listening to "Coumba". I don't need to understand the words. |
