Les Miserables

If you've got to this page, then chances are you've heard of Les Miserables and if you're a wise person indeed then you will have gone to see it in London or on Broadway. This CD is the original cast recording and has excellent vocal work from household names Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball and rather bizarrely Caroline Quentin of Men Behaving Badly fame.

This CD however is no replacement for seeing the musical live - it misses out pieces of linking material. This means that if you are listening to this as a substitute for seeing the musical, you may become confused by the jumpy plot. Anything Goes (2003)

I have to admit I wasn't expecting to enjoy Anything Goes when I went to see it in London a few months back. But not only did I enjoy it but it prompted a return visit the other day, which is when I got a copy of the CD. The tunes are catchy & the cast exceptionally good..not a weak link in the chain. This cast recording captures the spirit of the show. It's a recording which you could enjoy without having seen the show on stage. Well recommended.

The Boy Friend (Original 1954 London Cast)

There had been a number of recordings of the Boy Friend before but I Like this one the most as it is the original London cast with the lovely Anne Rogers plus bonus of selections from The Girl Friend, Hit the Deck, No No Nanette, a must for show tunes fans, and again very good quality sound. If you are seeking the "shining moment" that is Camelot, this is it! Over the years, Richard Harris made the role of King Arthur his own, and this version comes complete with all the dialogue normally spoken during musical numbers (unlike the Richard Burton/Julie Andrews soundtrack). His "Resolution" (Finale Act I) is a strong mix of emotions - anger, tenderness and finally resolve. Sondheim must surely be one of the most gifted lyricists of our time. I saw the show in London during the 70s a total of seven times and then saw it on various occasions when it was on tour! I would see it again tomorrow.

Having seen the original show with Jonathan Pryce and Lea Salonga, I also saw it a year later when the understudy was playing Kim and was not disappointed. All those years ago I brought my 5 year old up with the soundtrack and always promised her that if it came back to the stage I would take her. Now she is 15 and I was able to keep my promise at the Milton Keynes venue of the current tour and she was absolutely blown away. Jonathan Pryce was fab as the engineer in the original show, and I'm glad I saw him in that part, but the current cast, although doing a variation of the original is certainly not a disappointment. My daughter Hannah is desperate to see it again, with her friends, and the only down side is it is realistically not close enough ... Read More:

Michael Ball (Marius in Les Miserables) leads the cast as Caracticus Potts the misunderstood inventor. His singing ability is out of this world and he makes the score of Chitty sound beautiful, singing each song smoothly, enthusiastically and perfect! He was perfectly cast as Caracticus and the chemisty between him and co-star Emma Williams is great!

Emma Williams stormed into the media's attention when she was cast as the leading lady Truely Scrumptious. Apparently she is the youngest person to ever take the lead in a west end musical, although i think Lea Salonga was younger when she premiered as Kim in the London Production ... Read More:
