i came across this group at a local festival and they were amazing. There music is a mixture of reggai and funk with african tribal influence standing through. a definate to have in your collection and definatly cheers you up. Amazing - HAPPY MUSIC

Osibisa/Woyaya

Recorded in London (by `Django' Johnny Punter) and produced (not brilliantly, it has to be said) by Tony Visconti, their debut remains truest to their African and Caribbean roots. Whilst it's been freshened up a bit with digital remastering, it's still a bit soft in the bass (which, apparently, was never an area of particular priority in the Visconti sound book ~ check out the sleeve notes of the reissue of T. Rex's Electric Warrior to see why).

In this original incarnation, Osibisa was a sonically rich and culturally diverse seven piece band, the conventional foundation of guitar, bass, keyboards (including the magic Hammond B3 ~ yo!) and drums augmented (not entirely unpredictably) to great effect by lots of percussion with fruity ... This was my third Osibisa album, and may well be theirs too, and it still sends shivers down my spine at times. Okay. The first album was the most amazing thing I'd ever experienced. African music churned out at a frenetic pace with hard driving bass, drums and percussion, overlayed with beautiful brass. Woyaya, the second venture disappointed a few, but I liked it and still do. This is better than Woyaya in many ways, because it takes what was good about that album and builds upon it, yet takes away some of the mediocrity that it had. "Ye Tie Wo" and "Che Che Kule" are my instant favourites, but "Mentume" has its merits too. The usual Osibisa brass sections are well structured and work well against the bass/drums back-cloth. From the opening bars of 'Beautifull Seven' we are transported to a tropical jungle during a rainstorm and the scene is set. No one before or since has been able to marry African rhythms, brass,keyboards and guitar in the way Osibisa can. One can feel in this performance thier absolute pleasure at laying all this down, even producer the legendary Tony Visconti admits that it took till this, the second album before he could faithfully capture the Osibisa sound.Gut wrenching bass and guitar with layer upon layer of brass, woodwind, percussion and drums give a full clean sound, never overdone. 'We give you our treasure' they sing, most definately.
