Infest: UK Version

by: Papa Roach

Release Date February 12, 2001
To be honest, I've had this CD for YEARS and never fully listened to it until now!
It's better than I expected - production is sharp, the bass guitar is loud & pumping and the crunchy guitar work seems to be a hybrid of Borland's rhythm work with Limp Bizkit and the guitar harmonies that you would hear on Iron Maiden albums (Last Resort=Hallowed Be Thy Name!). There aren't any solos to speak of, but good riffs and a thick tone suffice, paricularly with such solid bass playing to accompany.
The drums are not overly technical but do the job, and there is the odd burst of turntable skills from (guest) DJ AM.
The lyrics it must be said are very teen angst, and the rap vocals won't be to everyone's tastes BUT in themselves are ... Read More:

Getting Away With Murder

by: Papa Roach

Release Date August 30, 2004
Forget NuMetal or Emo tags, this is a full on heavy ROCK album!
Anyone labelling this band as Emo hasn't a clue - I would liken this more to an updated version of what Motley Crue were doing back in theI late '80s.
It's fast, heavy (obviously not in the thrash sense) and raucous, with a real sense of spite. It's a bit heavier than the Paramour Sessions, and the Howard Benson production is crystal clear.
I go for much harder music generally, but this takes me back to the anthemic, fist raisers of the '80s BUT with less of the cheese!
There are good riffs & melodies, courtesy of bass player,Tobin Esperance who is the principal songwriter & Jacoby Shaddix, annoying as he is on camera, does have a really good Rock voice. ... Read More:

This album is a masterpiece. Papa Roach just get stronger and stronger. Really enjoyable listen and not a bad track on the album. Great to train to in the gym or just relaxation. If you get the limited edition one with Scars live and SOS these are 2 great additional tracks.

Lovehatetragedy: UK Version

by: Papa Roach

Release Date June 14, 2002
I have time for this act, I think it's good the way that they are attempting a sound akin to 80's Hard Rock/Metal ala Motley Crue, yet allied to modern sensibilities & production.
However, this is a dissapointing release living up to it's mediocre reputation. I'm generous in awarding 3 stars as the musicianship & production are of a decent standard BUT it's the songwriting that really lets the album down. It's average at best, with little in the way of memorable riffs, hooks or tunes.
The first release, Infest, was one of the better courses of Nu Metal served. However this seems to fall into a bit of a no mans land between that early aggression & freshness and the later, much improved songwriting of Getting Away With Murder and The Paramour ... Read More:

Lovehatetragedy

by: Papa Roach

Release Date June 17, 2002
When Infest came out in 2000, the radio waves were filled by one song called Last Resort, and Papa Roach had broke the mainstream and made a must-have metal album, selling over a million albums, going platinum.
So the problem from there, was how were they ever going to follow on from that height of success, and the answer lies on Infest's successor "Lovehatetragedy". Everything that made Infest a huge breakthrough can be found right here, the trade mark down tuned guitars and Coby's (he now goes as his birth name Jacoby Shaddix)anger management screaming particularly on the bloody death march of "Singular Indestructible Droid" and the closing of "Time and Time Again".
The main fault here is that this album suffers from sequelitis, many of the songs here could be fit on Infest, ... Read More:
