Every note is a pleasure and the experience of listening to a man so at one with his music is something rarely witnessed elsewhere. Narrowly edges "A Kind of Blue" for sheer class....

As I have very little by Paul Desmond, away from the Brubeck Quartet, this compilation looked like good value. Turned out to be fantastic value! The tracks cover the period October 1961 to June 1965 and consist of 8 with Jim Hall, 4 with strings and 1 with Gerry Mulligan. With one exception, I thought every track an absolute gem. The odd one out was "Alone Together" where I felt that the drums of Connie Kay, of all people, too intrusive. Paul Desmond was one of a small number of musicians who maintained such a high standard that one could virtually buy any album by him knowing it would be hugely enjoyable. His death at the age of 52 was a tragedy although whether he was a 60 a day boozer, as stated in the liner notes, is open to question. ... Read More:

For me the main attraction of the Brubeck Quartet was Paul Desmond. I bought the Mulligan/Desmond disc to get free postage! It is without doubt the luckiest buy I have made in years. I love Mulligan anyway, but Desmond has so much to say on this. Why didn't he do more? Buy it and play it, all sixty eight minutes of it, over and over.

This is a lovely record that showcases Paul Desmond as a composer as well as a player. The title track is a memorable tune that's been going around in my head for days. Unusual to find a bossa album with no songs by Brazilian songwriters, but Desmond's compositions show up really well.
Jim Hall's cool guitar perfectly sets off Desmond's cool alto, and it's nice to hear Connie Kay setting up some real Brazilian grooves. The quartet has a beautiful relaxed sound, and these days it's a joy to hear the silence between and behind the notes.

The two saxophanists here made their early reputations in very different quartets but together supported by various rhythm personnel they blend into a closely knit unit producing some fine jazz. Not suprisingly as both are by 1962 major figures in the world of swing music, however what is suprising is that only one track each is written by them, the rest are standards. This a short CD of only 40 minutes but never the less well worth adding to your collection.
