Probably my favourite of all Mr Haig's full-length releases. Sharp, snappy and "modern".
A timely re-release from Cherry Red who have thrown in a good selection of bonus cuts for good measure. Particularly pleasurable are the wonderful "Over You" (first time on CD) and the hypnotic "Free To Go (Public)". Shame there wasn't room for the "(Technology)" version. For those who've not heard this before then you're in for a treat as the track includes loads of Blade Runner samples - pretty apt really what with the 25th Anniversary stuff coming out for Ridley's finest.
The whole CD kicks off with Paul's catchiest song ever..."Something Good". One listen to this and you'll be hooked, I guarantee. Trust me.

Now I've been buying Paul's stuff for around 22 years now and he has rarely made me feel disappointed with an album release. At the time, I really did think this album was the bees knees; there's funk, there's rhythm, there's intelligence and there's Paul's voice soaring away over the angular, blocky electronica, courtesy of some fine musicians, including Tom Bailey from the Thompson Twins.
As my vinyl copy of Rhythm of Life has been gathering dust in my Mom's attic for a few years, it was one of Paul's albums that I very rarely played anymore. I tended to stick to his other albums conveniently available on CD.
I was pretty excited when I found that this album was finally going to get the digital treatment, but when the ... Read More:

Paul Haig has had several careers. First, frontman with the legendary Josef K, who produced the best singles on the Postcard Records of Scotland label and a major inspiration on later bands like Franz Ferdinand with their fast, choppy guitar sound. Then, mid-80s solo artist, with an Iggy-like croon, a cult following and some classy, electro and dance-tinged albums produced by the likes of New Order's Barney Sumner and Alex Sadkin. And latterly, the "Cinematique" series of largely instrumental film musics, in which Paul has abandonded singing altogether (there's just one vocal from him on vol 3 and that's it). This set contains three more groups of music to accompany imaginary films (tracks 1-3, 4-6 and 7-10). The first section on this CD ... Read More:

This album is somewhat of a departure from Paul Haig's earlier work. The sound leans heavily towards the chicago house sound of the late 80's and even gives a co-writing and production credit to Lil Louis.
On his earlier work Paul Haig had worked with New Order's Bernard Sumner and whilst New Order borrowed from the House sound, Paul Haig embraced it with open arms.
The result is disappointing in my view and there is far less of Paul's singing and lyrical rhetoric this time around. However, I listened right through and there is a chance it will be a grower.

This is just about the best thing Paul Haig ever has done. But I'd agree with other reviewers that the bonus tracks, while good, don't match the quality of the original album. Most of them can be found on other Disc de Crepuscle LPs of the 80s. Also the sound is just a touch underpowered. These are minor gripes and I'd still recommend it to anyone, but I got a vinyl copy the week it came out and won't be getting rid of it.
