Back Street Crawler

Paul Kossoff was a blossom who had only just begun to bloom. He had soul and restraint, which will always put him in the league of the greatest guitarists. "Time Away" is the most emotional electric guitar piece I have ever heard. For over 25 years it remains the most heartfelt piece of music to me.The sadness and sincerity of this album is sometimes overwhelming when one has learnt of the final years of Paul's tender life.

How come all this extra stuff has sat in boxes in some
darkened cupboard for the last 35 years ??? It's not as though the original LP had no spare space. Well anyone thinking of dabbling with drugs should listen to this. I'm not an advocate of putting out anything and everything that an artist ever recorded but this 2CD set is a real education. There is everything here from truely stellar brilliance to
slow and dull mediocrity ; fortunately much more of the former. All these
years later we are reminded of what a talent PFK was but how he
squandered his talents. A very tragic tale.

Molten Gold: The Anthology

The short and troubled history of the band Free is well known, but suffice to say that they probably did not last long enough to really fulfill their potential (this was particularly true of the tragic Paul Kossoff, who died at 25 and could have become one of Britain's most memorable blues guitarists). However, in the band's five years, through six studio albums and one live one, they established an instantly recognizable sound and created some lasting, classic music in a blues-rock vein. For those of us that believe that Koss was one of the greatest exponents of the guitar, this is a must have part of your colection. As an introduction to his work, it may disappoint. Koss's solo career was too short to permit a huge body of contrasting work to accumulate. So many of the tracks are available as studio versions on other albums. This album, along with Back Street Crawler, will give those interested in the post Free material some interesting and occassionally inspiring listening. The sound quality is not great despite remastering and so the definition of some of the guitar work is a unclear and imprecise. However, the raw emotion that Koss acheived can be appreciated on a number of the tracks.

Stone Free

Shows what might have been. The album to purchase to dip your toe in to the water.
