Neither work is particularly well known, even among enthusiasts for Vaughan Williams music. Don't let that put you off. Both are original and gripping works and Sancta Civitas is an extraordinary piece unlike any other work I know. It is the work in which the composer found the unique colours and dissonance that would lead to works like Job and the Fourth Symphony and is, perhaps, even finer than those great works. It is certainly original. The only previous recording that came anywhere near to doing the work justice was that conducted by Sir David Willcocks. This new account is in the same class and has the benefit of a superb modern recording that the earlier record cannot match. I genuinely believe that Sancta Civitas is one of Vaughan Williams' ... I have never been into classical music, however the TV programs Maestro and Last Choir standing (I know trash TV... sorry) made me realise I did like some classical music. So time to test that theory, and of course this CD fitted the bill perfectly, a bit of everything and 99% you will probably know. Good album, maybe I may have discovered culture :-)
The Voice, released in May 2001, is Russell Watson's debut album and marks the end of his progression from the pub and club circuit, and the start of his recording career after signing with the Decca label.
The album hit No.1 in the UK Classical charts and reached No.5 in the UK Album Chart. Following its release in the US it also hit the top spot, making history as the first time a British artist has topped both the UK and US Classical Charts, and if that wasn't enough, it was awarded `Album of the Year' and 'Best Selling Classical Album' at the Classical BRIT awards in 2001.
The songs are a mix of classical and popular, with the emphasis on the classics to enable its eligibility for that chart: 60% of the playing time must ... Read More:

This is a good selection of music normally played at the last night of the proms, but it is NOT a recording of the event itself. So Be warned and do not make the same mistake as we did.

Every year at this time Classic FM bring out a new triple CD set - and this year's is even better than the ones that have come before. I didn't think they'd be able to better "Time to Relax", which was last year's album - but they have! And they've done it in some style too by choosing music from their evening programme "Smooth Classics at Seven", which is presented by the legendary John Brunning. I can't recommend this album enough. And it does just what it says on the box. I've got my copy in the car at the moment - it's perfect as an antidote to a journey from Hull to Manchester on the M62 every morning. I'm seriously considering ordering two more copies - one for the office and one for home - the music choice really is that good. This is excellent stress-busting ... Read More:

RVWs first rewards repeated listening, and it took a few years before it really seeped into my soul. This recording is wonderfully balanced, and all the more dear to me being made in my home town (just opposite the bus station: well you need something to bring you back to Earth after an hour of this :o)

This Cd is well worth buying. Firstly it is excellent value for a double disc with over 2 and a half hours of music. The sound is superb and the varition is well mixed and suited. Highlight of this album for me are the haunting and divine Due Tramonti by Ludovico Einaudi (a genius!), a new choir arrangement of Barber's masterpiece Adagio for strings, Chopin's Nocturn Op.72/1 (as featured in 1 of last years best films "The Pianist"). Other highlights come from Arvo Part, Mascagni and Satie. Featured performers include Lesley Garrett, the Philharmonica Orchestra, Trinity College Choir. A fantastic album at a fantastic price, well worth getting, putting your feet up and relaxing and enjoying the beautiful music.
