This is quite a worthwhile recording. Bjorling is a strong Canio and the cast is very good with De Los Angeles, Merrill and Warren. I was quite disappointed by the sound, it is quite restrained and have the feeling that a stereo recording, or even a later mono recording, would give a better idea of what Pagliacci is all about. The voices of the singers are not that badly affected by the recording, and really shine, but the restrained orchestra and chorus is a disappointment.

This is one of the best versions of Pagliacci around. Unfortunately Naxos was sloppy with their transfer and there is an annoying low frequency hum in tracks 23 on. If you want this recording, I suggest that you buy the EMI which does not have this problem.
