Brighten the Corners: Nicene Creedance Edition

by: Pavement

Release Date December 08, 2008
This is a terrific album. I'd kind of forgotten how much I liked Pavement until seeing the "Slow Century" DVD recently. I'd continued following Stephen Malkus - I love his first solo album and I saw him with the Jicks twice, and those gigs were fantastic. I've heard the other two Malkmus and the Jicks albums, but I don't have them yet. They haven't immediately caught my imagination, except the song, "It Kills" which is fantastic.

Anyway, "Brighten The Corners" was the first Pavement record I ever got, having seen them live in 1997. I also think it's (probably) their best. "Crooked Rain Crooked Rain" is a little patchy in quality, and while "Terror Twilight" is wonderful for the most part, it is a little overproduced, and does possess ... Read More:

Crooked Rain Crooked Rain [Special Edition]

by: Pavement

Release Date November 01, 2004
I can't add much to what's been said about this fantastic album by one of the greatest but underrated bands of all time, except to say that Pavement were a very special band indeed. They created their own musical world and I'm thrilled to have discovered it, albeit in my thirties! I was aware of them at the time through John Peel but didn't appreciate how good they were. Too busy getting down with the 'Madchester' bands.

It takes a few listens for Pavement albums to get their hooks in. They seem a little chaotic and uninviting at first (and this has probably deterred a lot of listeners) but gradually reveal themselves and when they do you know you've found something very special indeed. This and 'Slanted and Enchanted' are now two of my favourite ... Read More:

Wowee Zowee: Sordid Sentinels Edition

by: Pavement

Release Date November 06, 2006
I've only just bought this issue and regret that I waited so long. The first disc which features the album and the EPs is consistently excellent, but the second disc, which I haven't investigated much yet, does not seem to be of the same standard as in the Crooked Rain set. The comparison by a reviewer here with the "white album" is justified. This album is notable for its variety and for consistent excellence. I've had the album before but have only now realized how consistently good it is. I would say it is their best album since the Westing by Musket collection. If you like Pavement this is essential.

Terror Twilight

by: Pavement

Release Date June 07, 1999
After hearing a good word about pavement from my friend i immediately saught out an album by them in my dads cd collection. I was not dissapointed. From first track 'spit on a stranger' the album has song a after song of great music. My favourite song has to be 'cream of gold' for it's amazing solo which sounds like radiohead being covered by sonic youth. I keep listening to this album and i love it. A great album for any fan of alternative music.

by: Pavement

Release Date December 17, 2007
Challenging stuff this and an album I really had to persevere with. Eventually the tunes start emerging from the ether and like muck, they stay stuck. A lo-fi work of art. A toss-up between this and Brighten the Corners for my favourite Pavement album. Winning me over are the mumbled and oblique Zurich is Stained (what is that about?) and the perfect pop gem Here.

Slanted and Enchanted

by: Pavement

Release Date September 15, 2003
Ahh! Pavements first album. I remember buying it in 91(?) having just moved to Essex and feeling like the worlds only indie fan. Summer Babe, Trigger Cut, Zurich... fantastic. These guys had obviously heard The Fall but, as Select magazine may have said, transcended the influence. Sounded dreadful next to Nirvanas big buck Geffen-fest. Tinny and bottomless but the material was much braver. This is one of historys great remastering jobs as it now sounds superb, and the bonus tracks are tough to find elsewhere. A 4 star album by any standard except for what came next.

Westing (By Musket and Sextant)

by: Pavement

Release Date February 12, 2001
I'm a pavement fan, having heard slanted and enchanted, their debut full-length first. Westing is a compilation of what happened before. If you have never heard pavement I think its better to get Slanted. If you like it (if you don't listen to bloc party) then you'll probably like Westing and Watery Domestic, the post-Slanted EP. While it is true that perennial live favourites such as debris slide and box elder are great pop songs, there is some other really worthwhile stuff on here. I particularly recommend Price Yeah!, Perfect Depth, Heckler Spray and Angel Carver Blues. The last two songs are a bit throwaway, but if you have got to the stage of buying a Pavement EP collection you'll probably already know the magic of the Pavement throwaway!

It took me maybe 10 listens to get this album ... Read More:

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain

by: Pavement

Release Date June 23, 1999
Of all the Pavement albums, although all gems in their own right, 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain' stands out as their most coherent and accessible set of songs. This album has a bit of everything and is perhaps the best record for those seeking an introduction to the genuis of Steve Malkmus & co. From the 'oooh, oooh, ooohs' and jangly guitars of 'Cut Your Hair' to the country rock of 'Range Life' with it's war of words against the Smashing Pumpkins there is always something to keep your ears interested. 'Goldsoundz' sees Malkmus at his best vocally with his hoarse tones gliding effortlessly over an airy guitar riff. Closing song, 'Fillmore Jive' sees Pavement at their most epic (or as close as Pavement get to epic!) with strung out blissful guitar solos and alternations between quiet and loud!
