Ruth Crawford Seeger was a folk music fanatic who compiled a series of books, one of which was devoted to Christmas songs. It is from that book that the album title and all but two of the tracks are taken (the liner notes do not say which two), although some of the tracks are not performed exactly as Ruth described.
Three of Ruth's children (Mike, Peggy and Penny Seeger), four of her grandchildren (Sonya Cohen, Calum MacColl, Kitty MacColl and Kim Seeger) and Ewan MacColl, father of Calum and Kitty (their mother was Peggy), took part in the project. Note that Kitty MacColl must not be confused with Kirsty MacColl, a daughter of Ewan MacColl by a previous marriage. Kirsty, of course, was a brilliant singer in her own right and I've ... Read More:

This is a very generous anthology of songs in the folk idiom so listeners are bound to have particular favourites.
The first ten tracks (apart from track 2) are traditional songs played on a variety of instruments - banjo, tinwhistle, guitar, autoharp, mandolin, and dulcimer.
What mainly binds these songs together is the quality of performance. The songs illustrate a range of vocal effects and instrumental techniques.
"Broomfield Hill" (Child 43) tells the story of a rather flirtatious lady who outwits a young man, who would have taken advantage, had he been permitted to. "Jellon Graeme" (Child 90) is a gory ballad, which acts as a warning to men who kill their pregnant lovers rather than ... Read More:

If you were of voting-age and over in the early 1980's, you should buy this album - even if you don't normally like folk music.
A mixture of poignant and comical songs celebrating (NOT!) Britain under Mrs.T.. Both humorous and direct, the lyrics will have you laughing one moment and reflecting the next.
Natural music, fantastic vocals, and memorable lyrics put this one in my top ten albums.

We owned this album on tape when my children were very young, and we played it endlessly. The kids loved it of course, but the songs are so beautifully arranged and played that parents enjoy it too. Throwaway verses of a few lines become little gems that stick in your mind in the hands of Mike and Peggy Seeger. Now my kids are older they don't listen to the album very often, but when they do they still enjoy it. And I sometimes play it for myself, not from nostalgia but because it is so good.
If you are going to buy only one album of songs for your children to listen to - make it this one!
