Glad to see this reissued along with "In the Round." These '80's albums are somewhat unjustly overlooked. There's a nice 'nature' theme to several songs, & adept arrangement of Milton Nasimento's "Mother Earth" (if Jansch's voice very different). Mike Piggott rather different sound than John Renbourn, but he brings his own abilities. Even the 'baroque folk' instrumental, "Dolphin" sweetly does recall earlier Pentangle instrumentals, if perhaps not quite the quiet assurance JR brought to these. MacShee's singing is very good throughout, if lyrically maybe some songs not quite so compelling. "Sad Lady" though is very interesting, cool sexy underated Jacqui song, with nearly a bit of 'Latin' vibe in arrangement. And some other 'near' standard ... Read More:

This is a very enjoyable Pentangle album, although to be honest I find Jack Orion a rather drawn out & dull affair. I'd rather a couple more tracks in the vein of Cruel Sister & When I Was In My Prime. However, it's well worth adding to one's collection for the other tracks alone; it was a brave departure for Pentangle from their usual fare, and it's great that they persued musical integrity over fame. This is certainly an album that deserves a lot more praise than it has ever had.

This could be Pentangle's best album - 'Basket of Light' is the only other contender, but this one has much more material on it.
The first disc was recorded live in 1968 and the second is from the studio. The live show is great, with a mix of folk standards, originals and instrumentals showing great dexterity and skill from all involved. Bert Jansch and John Renbourn's version of Mingus' 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' is a standout instrumental tune - very relaxing and melodic. The studio set is a strong album in its own right, with highlights (for me) being the guitar duel of 'In Time', the morality tale 'Sovay' and the grooving 'I've Got A Feeling', which borrows the chord sequence from Miles Davis' 'All Blues'.
