Cruel Sister

This is a very enjoyable Pentangle album, although to be honest I find Jack Orion a rather drawn out & dull affair. I'd rather a couple more tracks in the vein of Cruel Sister & When I Was In My Prime. However, it's well worth adding to one's collection for the other tracks alone; it was a brave departure for Pentangle from their usual fare, and it's great that they persued musical integrity over fame. This is certainly an album that deserves a lot more praise than it has ever had.

The Time Has Come

Anyone considering this box set will most likely already know Pentangle's music. So, no need to mention how wonderful the music is.

However, what is worth mentioning is that Sanctuary reissued this box set in 2008 - and this is the version to get, as the enclosed 60-page booklet is better glued in to the box set and looks like it will not fall apart - a major complaint of the earlier box set version.

Live 1994

This was the first Pentangle album I had ever heard - and it left a lasting impression for sure! The first cut on the CD, Bramble Briar, really took me over from the first listening. A very acoustic album, and the definition of european folk aspect it had - it really set me a flame! I would recommend this CD to anyone!

I'm very glad to see this and "Open the Door" reissued. After not hearing in a few years, I have to say I'm enjoying this record much more than I did at first. Of course, this group doesn't quite have the magic of the group with Thompson and Renbourn. There's much more pop aspect, even akin to Spanky and Our Gang a bit, and "Let Me Be" has almost has a rock vibe. While the arrangements aren't as inventive or singular as the original group, and involve more keyboards, they're still crisp and interesting, and Jacqui's singing especially is very good. Bert Jansch's "Saturday Movie" is a charmer-- maybe overlooked for him, and the trad. songs done well, plus two pretty good songs by Terry Cox, if Terry's playing isn't for me quite as compelling as ...
