What's the Frequency, Kenneth

by: REM

Release Date January 06, 2003
This song is a perfectly crafted Rock Pop song, with relatively hard guitar riff for R.E.M. The Lyrics will take ages to decypher, but extremly cool. One of Peter Buck's most recognisable guitar solos half way through the song, is Excellent.

If you like this song, and the Guitar Playing you'll also like the Album 'Monster', from which 'What's the Frequency Kenneth' comes from, eventhough Monster is not as Pop orientated as the song, it is formidable!

Animal

by: REM

Release Date January 05, 2004
R.E.M's new single "animal" is well worth the money. The song itself is one of their best for years. The B-sides are reasonable, a live version of "Pretty Persuation" and a live video of Losing my Religion from the Weisbaden concert during their 2003 world tour. This video however is contained on the "Perfect Square" concert DVD.

Reveal [DVD AUDIO]

Release Date September 30, 2002
The original CD release of R.E.M.'s 2001 album, REVEAL, was musically astonishing; lush, sun drenched, yet eriee and moody. Perhaps it's only fault was that it was a touch over-produced, and the songs felt 'constructed' out of the same effects and studio craft that overpowered the songs on UP. That doesn't stop REVEAL from being one of R.E.M.'s best moments, though, an album that captures perfectly the feeling of warmth that makes it a summer record. The songwriting is spot-on, with pieces like Saturn Return, I've Been High and Chorus and the Ring standing up to the brilliance of AUTOMATIC.

The DVD release of REVEAL, as with AUTOMATIC FOR THE PEOPLE, is a chance not only to hear a better sounding record, but to delve behind the scenes of ... Read More:

Reveal [VINYL]

Release Date May 14, 2001
I thought it would be interesting to see what customer rating this album has after looking at all the 'return to form after the last two disappointments' reviews of Accelerate. I like Accelerate but I prefer this one, it having several standout songs for me, including The Lifting, She Just Wants To Be, I'll Take The Rain and Beat A Drum. It's just how I feel of course, so it might not be any use to you and I'm sure others are more descriptive, but the album as a whole to me feels like a familiar, claustrophobic summer - but more pleasant than that sounds. Check out the version of Beat A Drum on the Best Of REM double CD if you like the standard version on this album. I like it even more...

Up [VINYL]

Release Date October 26, 1998
referring to my title for this review, when i say 'reverting to type', i mean that this band have returned from the great back to the very ordinary again. the 'great' being of course 'automatic for the people' - a career zenith for sure. an absolute peak with at least 4 or 5 classic, timeless songs. that album walked all over anything that went before, and also anything thats come after in R.E.M's recording output. in fact, its hard to imagine, hearing the rest of this bands albums, that this is in fact the same act responsible for 'automatic'

this album at least pushes the envelope a bit away from the bands usual repetoire of slightly grating jingly-jangly guitar based indie pop. theres a few on here that aspire to the beauty of the acoustic works ... Read More:

Strange Currencies

by: REM

Release Date January 06, 2003
Strange currencies is a fantastic track from the Monster album. To call this song a "stand out" track is perhaps an injustice to the others but it is in a similiar vein to Automatics "everybody hurts" and New Adventures "E-bow". Bonus tracks include the excellent opener from Automatic "Drive" and a cover of the Iggy Pop classic "Funtime". All in all a great package.
