This is without a doubt the worst single REM have ever released. An irritating music-hall style jangle-fest offering nothing but embarrasment to the REM fan. I was actually hoping for the traditional REM throw-away instrumental b-side, just for something to be able to identify with. But no,instead we are given another album track, the dull-as-dishwater groove-stink of "The Outsiders" with obligatory rap by Tribe Called Quests Q-Tip. Rarely have two such talents combined to create such boredom. The "Around The Sun" album has so few potential singles on it anyway that it was always going to be the "jauntier" tracks released, but this is a real low in the history of a great band.

I have listened to both of these albums and I can honestly say that these two are amongst the greatest of aall the REM albums. Monster is a bizzare mix ofsome quite elcronic sounding song and a number of more thought prevking ones. It is, however, possibly the worst possible memory for REM who dedicated it to a best friend who had recently died and also led to the most frightening world tour they had ever embarked upon.
New Adventures... is a much more rough sounding album which almost seems to be recorded completely live. Each song is a strange ne in itself and deserves to be listened to in its enterity over and over again. It is my personal favourite REM album.

This was the time when the UK stood up and took notice of Athens' finest. Their bravery in issuing a mandolin led first single was regrettably offset by their foray into cheesy pop. 'Shiny Happy People' and 'Radio Song' aside, this is an excellent record that holds songs of great variety and boasts two of the best songs of that particular era in 'Losing My Religion' and a song so personal that Mr Stipe had to perform it with his back to the audience - 'Country Feedback'. They may have been thrust upon the UK market for all the wrong reasons (see cheesy pop reference above), but in this case the end very definitely justified the means.

This is by some distance my favourite song. The final minute in particular makes this the most amazing piece of music ever recorded. The lyrics are fantastic even if they sound like gibberish on the first few listens. If you add to that the fact that you get Everybody Hurts and World Leader Pretend on here as well you have three of REM's best songs ... Bargain.
