Like many I was sceptical about the re-packaging of the REM Warners catalogue as DVDA and CD. The big dissapointment to me is the lack of a re-mastered standard CD version - you need a DVD-A compatible player to take advantage of the hi-res remastering. Nevertheless the 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS mixes can be played on a standard DVD player and let me just say they are superb! I'm not a huge fan of surround mixes but the mix on Green is a lesson in clarity. It really adds something to what is already an outstanding album and thankfully, the integrity of the recording has not been ruined by a load of random instrument placing and pointless sound panning. The mix just makes the sound more spatial and it's possible to hear much more information ... Read More:

I brought this album originally after listening to Murmur, which got me interested in rem's earlier stuff. the famous Its the end of the world as we know it (and i feel fine) will be immidiately reconisable but as you listen back through the other tracks the overall subtlety and feeling of the band through these times will become apparent. coming from a remote, slightly backward, town myself i found (Don't go back to) Rockville and Can't get there from here really relevent. i can't recommend this album enough, if just to put on at the end of a stressful day.

How do I give this 4 1/2 stars? 4 is too low, but it's not as perfect / fun as Automatic or Monster...
There's every REM mood of this stage of their career here, but I don't see that much point in Leave, Zither, or Low Dessert. As so many say about the White album, a shorter version would have concentrated the greatness of the rockers (Wakeup Bomb), rock ballads (Bittersweet me), love songs (Be Mine), incisive scenario-songs (New Test Leper)... and the perfect album- and show-closer Electrolite.
I'd probably recommend it behind 3 or 4 of their other albums, but it's only in comparison to those and other absolute classics that it appears imperfect.

A beautiful record that I never tire of listening to. It has been with me a long time - my favourite record alongside Nirvana Unplugged - and has a terrific soothing quality.
The only thing I would question is the inclusion of "Ignoreland" which hints at their later political actions but does little to complement the album's mood of brooding but optimistic introspection.
Strangely, perhaps, I'm not a big fan of "Everybody Hurts" either. But the rest of the album is sheer brilliance, and more than the sum of its parts. "Sweetness Follows" and "Nightswimming" in particular are sublime.
The band would never be the same after Bill Berry left, witness his input into songs like "Find the River", probably my favourite track of all time.

Can the story of R.E.M. be told in one compilation? Possibly not, but In Time tries to tell half of the tale thus far. The band tried to take into account fan opinion when compiling In Time, though when it came down to it, the view of both themselves and Warner Brothers carried a heavier weight.
Warners wanted one of the catchy singles on it, R.E.M. were less convinced and only acquiesced to The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite. In the end, Shiny Happy People was left off at the band's request and in doing so, prevented In Time being a true Greatest Hits 1888-2003.
Disc One of the two disc set is almost entirely made up of singles, apart from the strange decision to include All The Right Friends, an original track performed at R.E.M.'s first ever live performance ... Read More:

Musicwise this album is very good - see main (CD only) page for reviews of that though.
The sound on this DVD-A is very clear, especially the vocals, however I feel the multi channel mix subtracts from the performance, it's confused with instruments coming out from weird places for seemingly no reason, some albums get away from this treatment, this one doesn't. It has two different options for play on DVD-A however, multi channel and 2 channel. The 2 channel is amazing, much better quality thatn the CD (if your equipment can notice it - if you can't tell the difference between CD and MP3, don't get this). I previously owned the original CD but had it stolen and feel this is only worth getting if you don't already have the original CD, unless your audio equipment can bring out the quality ...
