I have always found The Sidewinder sleeps tonite very familiar and similar to another song. To my amazement my thoughts were confirmed when i found it on this single.
REM's version of In the jungle is great. I absolutely love it. And combined with the two other great songs it makes this single well worth getting.
I haven't heard such a good cover since I discovered "A reggae tribute to The Beatles, vol 2".

R.E.M. move in yet another new direction with this, their 13th studio album to date. And, as per usual, I'm happy to follow them. As much as I miss Bill Berry, I can't help but feel that their last 3 albums have contained some of their best material ever.
Around The Sun has Michael's voice mixed high up, and while the synthesisers of Up and Reveal remain, many traditional instruments are used as well. Mike's piano features a great deal, especially on the brilliant Boy In The Well.
The record is lush and emotional, full of the band's political outrage after the recent American elections, and the lyrics reflect the band's political stance; Final Straw and I Wanted To Be Wrong are their most overtly political songs to date. Read More:

This was the time when the UK stood up and took notice of Athens' finest. Their bravery in issuing a mandolin led first single was regrettably offset by their foray into cheesy pop. 'Shiny Happy People' and 'Radio Song' aside, this is an excellent record that holds songs of great variety and boasts two of the best songs of that particular era in 'Losing My Religion' and a song so personal that Mr Stipe had to perform it with his back to the audience - 'Country Feedback'. They may have been thrust upon the UK market for all the wrong reasons (see cheesy pop reference above), but in this case the end very definitely justified the means.

This is one of those albums which I can play in my head. The songs kind of bore their way in there!. I got the original album on tape, then upgraded to cd a few years back and now this version has come out. It is definitly worth picking up for someone who does not have the album, however R.E.M fans thinking this version contains lots of new surprises may be dissapointed. The dvd does contain a short promotional documentary and has some interesting stuff shot in the studio while making the album, but it doesn't quite justify the whole repackaging/reissue thing for me. Michael Stipe is interesting in the documentary, the way he talks about the band he is much more confident than before, almost arrogant, which is in sharp contrast to recent interviews ... Read More:

Having previously only owned Out Of Time, Automatic For The People, and Best Of, I was thinking "REM don't do rock". But I was wrong! People who like Monster or New Adventures will probably also like this. Ranging from medium-pace ("Begin the Begin") to frantic ("Just a touch"), the rock tracks have a vibrancy and freshness somehow lacking in the later works. But there is so much more to this album. "Cuyahoga" is arguably REM's best ever track. Simple, understandable lyrics, which make a political statement (like John Lennon) but are at the same time poetic (like Bob Dylan or early Paul Simon). Wonderful! Other highlights include the dreamy "Flowers of Guatemala", upbeat "I believe" and more political anthems ... Read More:

REM's last album 'Up' was a grave disappointment for the band's loyal followers, but the release of 'The Great Beyond' brought hope for the fans. Now 'Imitation of Life' gives the band a chance to redeem themselves with a good-old-fashioned REM rock song.
'Imitation of Life' brings a smile to my face - it's the lads from Athens, New Georgia, on top form again. The single is a sideswipe at the Hollywood culture which sees the band getting back to their roots as founders of the US punk movement back in the eighties. Although REM have never followed the true punk sound - they prefer to revel in their own delightful weirdness - they always get a message across in a beautifully harmonic style.
'Imitation...' is no exception, a wonderful sweeping ballad ... Read More:
