Great tunes, bit electro mixed with rap and the odd soft ballad creeping in.
She has a sweet voice but knows how to sing and her style is not like anything I've heard before. There is one or two on here that get on my nerves, I think the intro to the album is irritating as hell, but the rest is great. Lyrics are a bit odd, but it's refreshing to hear someone singing without the emotional angst and whiney voice that seems to be the norm these days.
Upbeat tunes and very catchy.
I will be buying her next one.

I have reviewed the box set already, but I thought this little gem deserved an extra pat on the back. Robyn displays a knack of tackling styles that shouldn't work. Of particular note is the Watersons meet Bonzos "Uncorrected Personality Traits" and the Five Blind Boys of Croydon "Furry Green Atom Bowl".
The piano has deliberate echoes of Satie and the whole CD has a certain bleak autumnal mist to it. That said I played the LP all year round and fine it is too in Spring, Summer or Winter.
For all Robyn uses his heroes as a stepping stone, Syd, Dylan, Lennon, Dame Kiri Tikanowa (ok so I made the last one up) - he adds much much more of himself. Few writers are more of themselves than Robyn whatever his detractors might say.

Moss Elixir changed my perception of Robyn Hitchcock. While his take on subjects remains off-the-wall, this is possibly the most consistently listenable album he's ever made.
Some tracks are instantly likeable: "Alright, Yeah", "De Chirico Street", "Filthy Bird" and "The Devil's Radio" all hit me instantly and also help hook you into the rest of the album. The rest... well, to say they crawl under your skin and hatch addictions into your system subtly and irresistably is maybe borrowing too heavily from Hitchcock's own style but I stand by the remark. "You and Oblivion" is perhaps the best example of this: a deceptively simple structure based around one chord makes it initially dismissable, but after another few listens it starts elbowing your psyche ... Robyn took a risk in holding back this track for release after her number one With Every Heartbeat (with Kleerup) and released Handle Me instead. This track deserves to be massive with radio support, it is such a beautiful, sad song and the remix package backing up the lead track is really strong. I'm hoping this track gives Robyn her second number one and boosts sales of the great album it's lifted from.

Hard on the heels of the last Soft Boys album proper, 'Underwater Moonlight', Hitchcock's first solo outing sees a move towards a more pronounced pop sensibility, coupled with an increasingly waspish lyrical content. Most of the songs remain guitar driven, with the bright sound of telecasters still to the fore, but the Barrett-esque whimsy is leavened with a healthy dose of (the then-recently departed) Lennon's sneer.
'Brenda's Iron Sledge', 'I Watch The Cars', 'Meat' and 'Out Of The Picture' all rattle along most satisfactorily (with Kimberley Rew and Knox of the Vibrators contributing some splendid guitar along the way), and all offer more or less cynical, sidelong takes on the world; 'Do Policemen Sing' is a withering ode to the enforcers of Law and Order ... From one of the most original minds in all of the creative arts emerge some of the most delightful sensory and intellectually satisfying experiences imaginable in a world more typically noted for its betrayal and disappointments. Robyn Hitchcock is a font of exhilarating and inspirational melodies that thrill and excite and the source of a seemingly endless stream of magical words that simultaneously evoke and populate a glorious landscape filled with images that effortlessly range from the familiar to the surreal.
