The Shins make great pop music. All of the songs on this album have a bright, catchy appeal. They are laid back but refreshingly original. My particular stand-out tracks are Caring is Creepy, Know Yr Onion!, New Slang, Girl on the Wing and Pressed in a Book. The only one I skip is the befuddling Your Algebra.
As well as the quality music, James Mercer's lyrics are a delight in themselves. Lines like 'a luscious mix of words and tricks' or 'no icicles stuck in my hide' show what an inventive lyricist he is. A pity you cannot always discern the words in the songs, but the CD jacket has them printed.
Chutes Too Narrow is the more accessable album so you may want to start your Shins experience there, but this is still ... Read More:

This album with all its vibrant colour and form, with James Mercer's wonderful voice and moments jumping from gentle to outright hedonistic and flagrant is so very different to Oh, Inverted World. Its openness, its lyrical content, and the wild and exciting turn it takes from their debut is enough to ensure repeated listens. Intelligent, thoughtful yet youthful and carefree at the same time this album is a bundle of good things and I would urge anyone who hasn't listened to take a moment to listen. This is their most exceptional release so far (and I consider their latest release into the calculation) and at least for moments as incomparable as Gone for Good, an acoustic piece written about waiting around then moving on- for good, it is such ... Release Date March 01, 2004
The first single from sophomore album 'Chutes Too Narrow', The Shins release the standout track (not to mention a slice of glistening pop perfection) "So Says I". With more than just a passing resemblance to the Beach Boys and other 60's guitar pop heroes, as well as more modern post-rock cult bands such as Built To Spill and Modest Mouse, the lead song from this 3-track single is so up-tempo and sickly sweet you can easily overlook the fact that it's a song about despair as opposed to happiness. For anyone familiar with the Shins, this sounds like it should be from debut album 'Oh, Inverted World' rather than the more mature follow up.
Also featured on the CD are b-sides "Mild Child" and an alternative version of "Gone For Good". The ... Read More:

I tried to order this performance as a DVD. I saw it on our local public access channel. Terrific. The only Carmina Burana that I've seen with its ballet version was live in San Jose, California. It was the San Jose - Cleveland (Ohio) ballet and orcestra about four years ago. I have looked to see if they ever recorded it. . . nope! It would knock your socks off, or is that Orff?!
