BGO once again release another great 2 CD set. This time two great live albums "At the Pigalle" from 1965 (UK #15) and "Live at Talk of the Town" (UK #38) from 1970. Both albums have a unique sound. "At The Pigalle" is a much more intimate affair and finds Bassey singing some superb standards as well as her hits "With These Hands" and "I Who Have Nothing". Bassey sounds confident and relaxed, her vocals are assured; there is no sign of the shrillness that is often found in her studio recordings leading up to this recording. The other CD was recorded in 1970, and was Shirley's return to the UK after a couple of years as a tax exile. This is the first time this album has been released on CD. For the most part, we Yanks know Bassey for her contributions to the Bond films, with her rendition of the "Goldfinger" theme, without a doubt, being one of the best performances in all of pop music history. We are not as fortunate as the British - and the rest of the world - to be as familiar with the legendary singer's total discography.

However, it appears that "Get the Party Started" should change all that as it is truly an album for the masses and those that truly appreciate a magnificent vocalist.

This Is My Life: The Greatest Hits

This CD gave my partner and I what we now affectionately call 'our song' - its 'Never, never, never' and means a great deal to us both. The rest of the CD is a sublime listening experience, sending shivers down your spine and making you laugh and cry. A wonderful collection of iconically sung masterpieces. Thank you Shirl.

BGO do it again! Two long out of circulation albums back again sounding better than ever before and with good informative notes as well. There are also some superb bonus tracks.

I really do like both of these albums very much indeed and I'm really glad to have them back in my collection. They are, however, not quite my favourites of Dame Shirley. It's nothing to do with the performances although I find myself agreeing with the note writer that "Over the Rainbow" misses the innocence that we tend to associate with this song. Not every song on "You Take My Heart Away" is of the quality we found on Dame Shirley's earlier United Artists albums. This album is very good but doesn't quite scale the heights of her very best work.

Diamonds Are Forever: the Remix Album

This album has been in my collection for ages, brought on a whim as I hoped it had the history repeating track that was then in the charts. It didn't but what it did have was a fantastic intoroduction to one of the most gorgeous vocalists I have ever encountered. The sound, all in, is lush and lavish and the range is staggering, fun, foxy, devastated, frivolous. I still listen to this before going out for an evening. If at first you wonder what the hells going on then give it some time, I apprreciate it's probably fairly radical for the people that are more familiar with her classic material, but as a way in for someone of my generation I can't fault it, and still when I listen I get something new out of it....ah, less talk, go buy!

"Goldfinger" or if you prefer "Goldfingaaah", "Diamonds...", "Big Spender" . . . This album includes some of Shiley's Greatest. But, there are so many Shirley Bassey 'Greatest Hits' CD's out there, do we really need another one? Instead they should try and re-release those un-available recordings from the 70's.
Well, Anyway... Shirley's Dynamic Voice and Emotionally charged performances will sure satisfy new & old fans over and over...

Nobody Does It Like Me/Love Life and Feelings

It's really good to have these two albums back in circulation. BGO are really doing fans of Dame Shirley a great favour by reissuing those albums that EMI didn't get round to.

"Nobody Does It Like Me" is almost the forgotten Dame Shirley album. On the EMI/UA years compilation, it is not mentioned in what is supposed to be a complete discography! Fortunately, BGO did not forget it. Of the two albums reissued here, it is the one I prefer. It presents a good mix of bright tracks and more introspective songs.
