There's A Riot Goin' On

by: Sly & The Family Stone

Release Date April 09, 2007
...but like any work of original art, you need to put time in to learn to appreciate it. Once you've accustomed yourself to the very different approach Sly and Co are taking here, you'll be in for a treat. 'Family Affair' may be the best known and most commercial track on here, but everything will repay your attention. Some of the most compelling grooves ever laid down on tape....before too long, you'll find yourself surrendering to them.

Stand

by: Sly & The Family Stone

Release Date April 09, 2007
Utterly brilliant album, which i only discovered after seeing it (in The Rough Guide To Rock) recommended as being in the must-have category. And it surely is. Heavily funky, psychedelic cross-over music. Fortunately, there are a couple of lighter numbers on the album. You need them, just so as to be able to take a breather from the serious stuff.

The absolute highlight, for me, is the outrageously funky "I Want To Take You Higher". (A much "chunkier" mix from the one on my quadrophonic "Sly and the Family Sone: Greatest Hits" LP.) Plenty of other tremendous tracks, like "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey", the brilliant "Sing A Simple Song" and "Sex Machine". The last is a quite fabulous jam, which you won't find anywhere else(?). Too long ... Read More:

Small Talk

by: Sly & The Family Stone

Release Date April 09, 2007
Unfortunately, as is the same with every great run, it has to end somewhere. In truth there is only one track which even compares to standard of the previous album(s) and that is the magnificent 'Can't strain my brain'. This album is the beginning of another run, this time of poor albums, which as stand alone collections of music may not be that bad, but when compared to masterpieces like 'Fresh' and '..Riot' seem very generic.

Dance To The Music

by: Sly & The Family Stone

Release Date April 09, 2007
This release is given four stars due to the excellent bonus tracks which feature single versions and previously unreleased recordings such as the dramatic slow burning 'We Love All'. The actual 1968 release of 'Dance to the Music' is a 3-star album mainly due to its length and depth of material. Larry Graham is the dominant force on this album and his funky basslines lay down an upbeat groove throughout a very upbeat and positive album, the title track 'Dance to the Music' being the major hit. This album hasn't dated well and the song structures are all to familiar however it is worth remembering that Sly probably came up with the ideas in the first place.

A Whole New Thing

by: Sly & The Family Stone

Release Date April 09, 2007
This first effort by SATFS tends to get short shrift from both critics and anthologisers. Unfairly, as - while it may fall well short of the groundbreakings heights of Stand! and ...Riot..., it's still a good example of Sly's unique blend of soul/R&B and psychedelia. The opening cut, Underdog, is one of Sly's most underrated tracks - very punchy, with a clever borrowing of the old 'Frere Jacques' refrain. The rest of the album maintains the same standard. If you like SATFS, you can feel confident in buying this.

Stand!

by: Sly & The Family Stone

Release Date March 03, 2008
this album really is an amazing album. it has a quality which liberates the mind from the drudgery of everyday life and shows us what life should be about. all the songs are great from the long but humourus jam of "sex machine" to the angry scream of "don't call me nigger, whitey". the lyrics are also worth a mention on this album; "everyday people" and "stand" both contain really great and memorable lines that leave a lasting impression. however, all this aside, "i wanna take you higher" is the song that makes this album a masterpiece. it drives with such a force that it causes you to forget the troubles of your day and instead live the ecstacy within the music. the song is a five minute anthem of pure gospel/funk/rock. it will have you dancing like ... Fresh

by: Sly & The Family Stone

Release Date April 09, 2007
A mix of everything funky Sly manages to follow 'Riot' with, for many fans, in 'Fresh' his greatest effort. Considering his personal turmoil at the time Sly jups into this recording with total confidence, 'If you want me to stay' is a fine central piece combining chug-along not-quite-slap bass with jazz chords on keys, totally unique in terms of ballard-writing.

Greatest Hits

by: Sly & Family Stone

Release Date
Sly and the family stone like James Brown, have influenced Miles Davis (his late 1960 early 70's great funk/fusion era lps), Prince + countless others. This cd compilation is a great introduction to the ecstatic world of sly stone and his band. Its not definitive of course but its a hell of great place to start: tracks such as stand, sing a simple song, dance to the music, hot fun in the summertime etc etc .

wonderful timeless music.

Life

by: Sly & The Family Stone

Release Date April 09, 2007
Highlighted by upbeat tracks such as 'Life' and 'Fun' the album has a very loose and creative feel. All the family members have creative input here, the funky raw guitar of Freddie Stone is dominant throughout several tracks. Unlike the civil rights themed follow-up 'Stand' the message in this album is to party and enjoy...Life.
