...nothing better to warm the cockles on a cold winters day. Really cheering stuff if you like it slightly quirky, and let's face it English eccentricity can't be beaten when delivered as the Temperance Seven do.
Release Date March 19, 2001
The chaps at Lake Records have done it again and are to be applauded for a job well done.
This collection of twenty-five musical gems includes all but two of the recordings made by the Temperance Seven between 1962 and 1965.
A jolly good collection it is, too!
It opens with a hitherto unreleased offering by the Carnation Quartet wherein the dulcet tones of Whispering Paul McDowell serve as a gentle introduction to the musical feast which follows.
Although there were several changes of personnel since its initial rise to prominence in those far-off halcyon days, musical standards did not deteriorate one jot, with many arrangements reminiscent of the early Duke Ellington Orchestra and other renowned musical assemblages ... Read More:

Great music! This is a well produced and relaxing CD to listen to. A fewaudience coughs on some tracks, some applause on others: the recordingquality is good. Very few vocals are not up to par but the early tracksfeaturing 'Whispering' Paul McDowell and the later ones, featuring a moreconfident Allan 'Moody' Mitchell, are splendid. All of the arrangementsare ones that baby boomers will remember with joy.

I came to this disk with no prior knowledge of the Temperance Seven or their exploits in the world of jazz. Therefore the contents of the disk came as a very pleasant surprise. What I found was a series of twenty-eight lively and well played jazz numbers, some well known and others less so. For those who appreciate a tight jazz ensemble playing the old style jazz, and doing it well, this series of recordings will be most welcome, as it was for me. The sleeve notes are neatly presented, and although fairly brief, they do give a list of the players and a brief background about the recordings together with a photograph of the group in a session.

George Martin is best remembered for his work with the Beatles but he produced a diverse range of artists, among them the Temperance seven. This group was formed in the mid-fifties but made it big in 1961. During that year they had their only four UK hits but they continued performing for many years thereafter. This is the first of two volumes covering their complete Parlophone recordings. As this volume includes all the hits, this is the one to buy if you only buy one volume.
The group attempted to recreate the sound of the twenties with plenty of brass instruments including trumpets, euphonium, trombone, saxophones and clarinets among the instruments used. Other instruments included piano, banjo, spoons and a grand jazz percussion ... Read More:
