I really want to like it. It's ingenious and marvellous and at the time I'm sure it was groundbreaking. But though I love Abbey Road, I can't say the same for this. I was genuinely disappointed.

Nowadays critical consensus often ranks this as The Beatles' best album, and indeed one of the best albums ever made. While it's only my second favourite by them personally (The White Album being first), this is still one of the greatest albums I own.

Revolver is the point where The Beatles ceased to be a pop group and became something else entirely. So here it is - the best selling songs from the best selling band ever. The idea behind this compilation is that all the songs were Number One singles either in the UK or US. Sounds fairly simple, but in fact browsing the negative reviews on here shows many people complaining about this CD. Main criticisms are either that a Beatles greatest hits isn't necessary because people ought to buy the individual albums, or moans about certain tracks being omitted (Strawberry Fields Forever has been mentioned a lot - yes it might very well be the Beatles' best single but it didn't reach No. 1).

This classic album is one of the most popular Beatles albums and certainly marked a change of musical direction for the boys as well as a more mature and "deep" style of music. I've been a Beatles fan for over 20 years now and as I have grown, so has my love and understanding of the music, which has never dated, more than 40 years on. I shall now give a brief runthrough of the album, track by track.

1. Drive My Car - one of the Beatles songs everyone knows. Cheerful with a really funky guitar. Easy to listen to, catchy, perfect pop sound.

2. Norwegian Wood - another very well known Beatles song. I love the sitar in it, and this was the beginning of George Harrison's life-long love affair with India, it's music, religion and culture.

A Hard Day's Night

For me, this is the finest Pop album of all time. Every song is a hit, performed with passion, fire and skill. George Martin just let them play and smoothed over the edges without dampening their fire. I don't think they bettered this album for consistancy. No offence to Ringo, but I'm so glad he was not handed a lead vocal.

This is the Pop benchmark. 'Everything seems to be right!'
