Infinity On High

I have to admit I am a little out of touch with modern music, I like what I know and that does me fine. However on a random trip to my local record store I couldn't help but tap my feet as I walked round. I didn't know who it was playing through the store speakers but loved their upbeat cheeky sound so curiousity got the better of me and I had to go ask a shop assistant. "Fall Out Boy" she said. Nope, sorry never heard of them, but I still went directly to the shelf and bought this album. I absolutely love it, can't stop playing it, it's on my ipod and accompanies me to work, I have it on in the background when I'm doing the housework and I even play it when I'm working out.

From Under The Cork Tree

I was slightly apprehensive about the CD that had just been bought. Having read some of the song titles I thought this might be just a mish-mash of, well, "rubbish" rock.

However, after hearing the first track, I found that I was enjoying it. The drums provided a nice beat and the guitar parts were great. The lyrics were sometims challenging to hear, but with a lyrics book it was fine. The hard-hitting opening guitar was refreshing and they had some great material.

Lines like: "I've got an arrogance down to a science", "The best part of believe is the 'lie'" and lots of others, really stuck in my mind and the songs delivered lots of stimulation and greatt listening for me.

Stop whining, snivelling, prevaricating. If you you want SMOOTH, SEAMLESS, CLEAN, go and listen to Boston. This is art. This is provocation. Its messy. Its difficult. I saw a bunch of these songs played live last night in Donegal, and it was extraordinary. Nobody else is doing this. Celebrate!

The enjoyability of this dvd will depends very much on 2 things -
1. How much you like Fall Out Boy.
2. How much you like live music.

For those of you who have never heard live music, don't expect this dvd to sound like the songs you will hear on your cd player.For those that have heard live music and like it, its fantastic.
Expect good songs, good singing and good instramental music. I will point out how different Patrick sounds live to how he sounds on cd, he has a lot more depth and I personally think his voice is quite unusual.
Look out for the "Beat it" cover as it really is excelent, I wasn't expecting them to pull it off to be honest (never having heard it done by FOB before) but I was suprised how good it was.

50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong: 39 Golden Greats

If you've had just a passing interest in music over the last 30 years or so, and bought the occasional magazine, chances are you have come across the Fall; chances are, equally, you could not sing or even name a single record here. No matter, it would still be worthwhile laying down the required green and taking a chance on this compilation. If you don't like what you hear then it's no great loss, but it's more than likely that you'll enjoy a good number of these tracks. If you like most of this album then you are just about to fall in love with this band and if you are going to get gooey over a group there's few better candidates.

Take This to Your Grave

This is my favourite and arguably the best Fall Out Boy album to be released, the same superb lyrics and craftsmanship which went into from under the cork tree but a lot more raw and with more emotion, a lot less commercial.
All of the songs are unique and brilliant and it is a far cry from Infinity on High which is quite frankly poor, and yes Fall Out Boy did sell out for this album, but if you listen to this album you remember why you fell in love with in the first place.

Grotesque (After The Gramme)

I first got into The Fall (or F All) listening to the Rough Trade compilation "Totally Wired", and thinking "Oh my God, where has this been all my life!!???". I loved the raw, home grown feel of that album, and love this equally as much. This album is good old fashioned "have a go" rock and roll. Buy it now!

Hex Enduction Hour

The Fall's refusal to stay in one musical place for long has led to many good but few great records. Sometimes production lets them down, sometimes song choice and sometimes it's the performances. The Fall's more recent releases, for example, have included some fine music but occasionaly suffer (sorry Fall die-hards)at the hands of Mark E Smith. He may be the main driving force behind every Fall record but there's no getting away from the fact that sometimes his vocals sound like a Friday night drunk, reading his order off the menu at a Chinese takeaway. Then again, that may be the appeal to some listeners. And to be honest, like or loathe what they do you wouldn't change them and on most records they do manage one or two superb songs.

Reformation Post TLC

As always- another year, another reliably good Fall record. On a par with Fall Heads Roll. Saw them play the final gig at Hammersmith Palais earlier this year (before it was demolished to make way for flats); great live band,- especially Dave Spurr on bass. A multi-layered record which demands repeat listens before it exposes its quality, fully.Excellent.
